An ISB200 that died with it's boots on.........

Breaking news! on the Cummins.

My uncle has an 86 white toter home that everyone tells him has a cummins N 14 engine in it. We would like to know the horse power rating for it. Where would you find the data plate on this engine? Thanks

Left hand side of the accessory drive housing. Should be able to see it standing by the left front tire.

Should be a tag riveted on there.

Look for ESN (8 numbers long) and CPL (3-4 numbers long) on the tag. That will tell you what horsepower it was built to with our help.

Mike. :)

It could be that some hack (I won't call him a mechanic) pried it off instead of writing the numbers down on a piece of paper in order to have the CPL number to take with him to order parts. I've seen it happen.

Bill

OK, will try another approach.

Please e-mail the serial number of the truck itself to me at -- email address removed --

I will have my chums at the local Volvo-White Dealership try to find it that way.

I don't think the N-14 existed in '86, most likely an NTC series of engine. It could also be an L-10 or M-11 as well.

The caution with using the trucks vin is that it will not help you if the engine has been changed. Remember that if you ever have to get internal items such as injectors, cykinder kits, etc. they will have to be identified by the part numbers stamped on the components. That is a good rule to follow all the time anyways with older stuff. You never know if someone uprated it or made some other changeover at overhaul time.

Yep, it could be that the internal parts were changed and who ever did it knew the CPL would not be good anymore for ordering the correct parts and removed the tag. I've seen that happen too.

Here is what I have. .

Truck is old enough that they cannot pull up the Engine Serial Number.

But the records did show it was built with a Cummins 350 Big Cam IV.

So that alone will get you to small parts but if you ever need internal parts as I mentioned before you will have to get the part numbers off whatever you need.

Hope this helps... . ;)

OK so is there any way i can tell by lookin if thats the engine thats still in it?And if it is do you know if that was a good engine.

The drivers side of the engine will have a large sloped intercooler mounted on the side of the head. There will three individual heads, rocker boxes and valve covers. Down low on the drivers side of the block ahead of the starter there will three cam follower assemblies they look half rounded, sort of. Might be under a couple hundred pounds of grease.

Search YouTube for 855 cummins, there is a gob of em.

They are very good engines, stay on top of valve adjustments and they will run forever.

I will look around the dooryard today at lunch to see if there are any here. If so will get you a few pictures of one.

Nyoest has provided a great description of one.

ok thanks alot. So is there a special coolant fill procedure for that engine because my uncle drained it down to replace the block heater and now it has an overheating problem.

IIRC, the intercooler is cooled with coolant and is probably about the same height as the top of the radiator. Check to see if there is a coolant vent plug on the intercooler.

It's been a long time since I've been around those engines and my memory is a bit "fuzzy". :-laf

jakprince,

Went out to talk to the techs this morning and they think that the system may still be low. This engine may have low-flow cooling which can be a challenge to fill.

Mike. :)

Doesn't the big cam 4 use a small radiator for the aftercooler, separate from the main engine radiator? Maybe he only filled the small one yet drained the main one when he changed the engine block heater?

Nick

Jakprince, want to see a neat pic of a N-14 cummins?. . saw this at the Cummins museum in Indiana. it is a N-14 cummins blown apart and suspended on wires.
