Ok im new here and had a couple questions. I have a 2002 2500 HO. It rarly gets driven and is sitting at 45,000. I started getting the dead pedal few weeks ago and came here for advice. I changed the LP to a fass ddrp. I borrow the neigbors scanner and got the code 0216. I deleted old codes and drove and got the 0216 and dead pedal again. From reading the post on here it appears im going to be replacing the injector pump. My question is What do I do to keep this from happening again?? If i replace the vp44 wont this just happen again with no notice like before?? Have they changed the vp44 since?? I understand i could put a gauge on the fp, but i dont believe the old lift pump was bad. The only other problem recently was a NO Buss code 1698 in which i cleaned and tighten the main fuse block...

In my experience the 02 ho pump has been the model I have changed at

The lowest mileage of any. The replacement does have many improvements.

Unfortunately, no mechanical device lasts forever.

To get the longest possible life from your VP44, make sure the fuel pressure at the inlet never drops below 5psi (you must have a fuel pressure gauge to be sure) and supply it with only clean high-quality fuel. Assuming you're not otherwise abusing it by racing or performance modifications, there's not much else you can do.

Bosch has upgraded some of the internal parts over the years, so any fresh rebuild done by an authorized shop should have these improvements.

Best regards,

Probably, just a matter of when. The problems surrounding the VP-44 and the root cuases of the failures are pretty well documented and some things are just not fixable.

Get a pump that has the upgraded electronics and hard parts, make sure you run good fuel pressure, filtration, and additives is about the best you can do to enhance its life span.

I understand nothing last forever, but dam 47k and $1000. 00 bucks already. So next questions Any recommendations on where to get a IP, and FP Gauge???

Also just curious here, but i did get a new ecm under warranty at 20k. I got the code 1698 and no buss twice. Could it be the ecm or no buss that caused the pump failure and not the LP? If the LP was bad wouldnt it have quit working all together?

I and a lot of others like Blue Chip Diesel(bluechipdiesel.com) go to his website & he has two styles of VP44 rebuilds. I don't think that the ECM would cause the VP to go bad. a weak or failed lift pump would cause it to fail as the VP can supply enough fuel to keep it running but not enough for good lube & cooling. A fuel pressure gauge is a must !!!! Below 5 psi & you are asking for trouble. JLandry mentioned that in his post #5 reply. Chip Fisher has some great write ups on the VP44.

Try Midwest Fuel Injection for an IP. The 2001 and 2002's had brass bores in the pump and failed early. Mine got dead pedal at 52K and P0216. New MWFI pump is working fine. Knock knock on wood. 92K and counting.
