Was draining the fluid in the 1999 2wd and there was a piece of what looks like an inner snap ring stuck to the magnet in the pan. pan was near spotless otherwise (Amsoil)... ... bout an inch long but has a little bit of fret on one side, a clean fracture that's fairly old, and looks like it would be used on a circumference of approx 4. 5 to 5 inches. .

Anybody want to take a stab at this one??????<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Well, it IS part of a snap ring... I'd probably recommend fixing it before it becomes a problem and trashes hard parts.

In retrospect, by the angle of the finished end, it looks like an outer retaining ring... . Thought we might have a builder that could do a good WAG on it. .

Likely the retainer in the OD clutch pack. I think thats the only one that will allow a piece to fall out.

I was kind of thinking that also after looking at the service/parts breakdown for the unit... ... it looks like this is servicable separate from the installed trans... perhaps?...

Kind of wondering at the options here,. . the trans is working fine... ...

To a point it is. You just have to make sure when the OD unit is re-installed the clearances are correct. Some builders will do it, others won't even touch it for warranty reasons.

Its a small piece so the rest of it is likely still holding. It could run for 50k like that with no issues or loose OD tomorrow. Its probable the trans will work for a long time, but, something that needs addressed at some point.

Kind of have to agree with ya there... the residue that was on this as attached to the magnet was the same as what was on the pan face and magnet. It appears to have been in the pan for quite some time... OD and trans works fine and may for quite some time. I wouldn't leave a main cap bolt or a head bolt out of something,... but this..... looks like 90% is still holding something well... (I am my own warranty depot)... .

Hey thanks for the input, your board input seems pretty common sensical... .

Have a good one. .

I talked to a long-time dodge trans tech today about it, he said that he's seen it often enough and it's always the OD clutch pack, which you can service with the trans in the car.

This is exactly correct. Mine did the same thing, and the trans went another 40+K miles before it failed for other reasons.

... ... I'm just going to adjust the bands and button it up. . even if it grenades the trans later I'm money ahead to just service it totally then... it's been a fine horse... ...

Yeah I noted and dated with a sharpie on the pan and put the piece back on the magnet and buttoned it up.

Road test after fluid/filter/band adjust was fine... ... . it could out live me... .

Thanks folks, nice discuss'n this...

Hate to have somebody else trying to figure out what happened to it if they tear down the trans. It's very secure where it's at, you almost have to use pliers to get it off the pan magnet. .
