I have a question about the stock turbo in my 06. Was looking the engine over today and inspected the turbo compressor. How much if any play is normal in the compressor wheel? I have no fore and aft movement but some slight movement up and down. Not enough that it hits the body of the turbo no marks at all but i have never really checked play in it before.

Your fine as long as it is not contacting the housing. The journal bearings/shaft float in oil, that is where the movement comes from.

Thanks for the information. Have not looked at the aftermarket much for turbos. Who has a good single offering for towing near max payload.

I have a Super B on my signature truck. It works great. They now offer a Killer B for your truck which is a direct replacement and does not require the exhaust adapter that my Super did. Invest in their manifold also.

Our trucks seem to really like the Garrett Powermax stage 2 turbos. Ball bearing and watercooled center section.

seafish-
when looking at turbo blades from the intake side,
which movement is good, which is bad?

Some Side play (left/right OR up/down) is OK... . this is the space that allows the oil to lubricate the bushings

ANY End play (forward/back or in/out) indicates too much wear.

Of course if the blades contact the housing at any point, that is obviously NOT acceptable!!!

This is true in a journal bearing turbo, minimal radial play, zero axial play. I do not know about a ball bearing unit, maybe AH64ID or someone with knowledge on these will chime in and give his insight...

Yeah, pretty sure JFought was asking about the stock turbo, which is a journal bearing turbo.
