Hey Fellow 1st Genners (AKA Members of the Funny Farm! :D)

Seems we like to get off topic sometimes (OK, a lot! :D) in a thread...

So I thought maybe we need a 1st gen thread that can somewhat contain our random ramblings, thoughts, comments on what we did today, why newer trucks suck, why your fellow first genner is stupid, etc. :-laf Basically a more social thread.

So if you have random thoughts, feel free to post here. If you are a 3rd gen guy commenting on how old, ugly, slow, or usless our old beloved trucks are, go away! If you can play nice, you are welcome to join in! :p:-laf

With that, fire away!

I have been a Cummins fan since day one so I watched the development of the 5. 9 for Dodge. When they first came out I was slobbering, but could not make myself buy a Dodge, so in 1990 I bought a new, in the crate engine from Cummins and installed it in my old Ford. I was so impressed that the following year I bought my first Dodge and have never looked back:)

Now THAT is cool! Already learning stuff...

Random question. What was included on the crate motor and how much was it? Never crossed my mind that one could order a crate strait from Cummins!

OH, yeah!! I've bought several big motors from Cummins for repowering tractors, farm and OTR, and stand alone units such as generators, water pumps, or boat engines. I, personally, really think they're way to high, but when your working for another company... ..... :D Cummins has many, many options, and you can get one with just about any wire loom you want. For example, if you want to put it in a tractor, you just have to tell them what sending units you want, and they'll either install them, or leave them open for you to install your own. The rest will be done, and done right, in a self contained unit. The N14 packages are really neat, and you want to talk about power!!! I put one in an old 875 Versatile a few years ago (11yrs?), and the tractor went from 280hp to 360hp. The owner was very pleased. The install was a simple, drop, bolt, and plug in!! I've been eyeing their new QSXseries, where they have a new 4. 5L... . Cummins Engines - Off-Highway - Agriculture - Tier 4/Stage IIIB - QSB4. 5

Anyway, back to the older cummins..... they have the ReCon program, I'm sure you've heard of it. If you have a core, you can get a newly Reconditioned one. They do quite a few B5. 9s... :D And they're a little cheaper than a new crate engine. All you need is a core!! http://cummins-sp.com/document_library/Fliers/Cummins/Engines/mid-range_automotive_recon_flier.pdf

OH, and Bchwarzli, good idea... maybe this'll help keep us from pokin' at you so much on your Ultimate 1st gen thread... ..... maybe... . :D

Cummins recons are very popular in the boating world. Many have used recons to repower older boats. The 6BT 210 hp is the most popular for that from what I can tell. It uses a CAV rotary injection pump.

Current street pricing is "around" 16-18K and that includes a marine gear (cost of about $2500) and a single station gage panel w/wring harness.

Pricing varies on the marine stuff. You have to shop and deal. I'll bet the same is true for the truck engines.

Soft Muffled Diesel Sound, Barcalounger Ride, But Complicated Emissions System

I love my first gen, although I am hard of hearing now.

The comfy ride and orthopedically correct bench seat are without compare.

I hate working on all the emissions related stuff that hangs off the engine though.

(I am extremely grateful that my wife let me keep my first gen. It's 100% truck. )

Good to know! I plan on repowering a boat with a 12V at somepoint... . forget this V8 boat business!:-laf

And what is the definition of "marine gear"? Is that an outdrive (in the words of us land lubbers)?

Yes, I have heard it before. Want to say it was like 8-10K or so??? Had briefly looked into it back when searching for the crew cab otor. Didnt work out due to cost! ;)

Yeah, I dont think that will happen! You guys are not capable of leaving that thread alone (and when I say "you guys" I mean you! :D)

Well here is a new face! OK, not really, but a face we dont get to see often! Welcome to the no subject thread!

Hate E related stuff eh? You are a true 1st genner! 5 bonus HP to you! :-laf

It loves me, It loves me not!

I absolutely Love the '93. It does need a few things done, such as a rear axle "dis-member" overhaul. However, since I'm not towing, it will work for now. Have to get on a ladder to do anything in the engine compartment:-laf!

Its funny how folks wont park near "New Ugly", when I have to take it to TownOo. . I reckon they are afraid that the "Ugly" will jump off and stick to their yuppie mobiles. Specially them Prius hood ornaments:-laf

Dont have to worry about mosquitoes, either! I just floor "Ugly" and I get instant fog! Course, I gotta wear a 3M full face respirator to breathe, my-own-self. Now, if there is any truth to evolution:-laf, I would soon expect to see them Mosquitoes to be carrying custom fit, 3M full face respirators, next season. They might even upgrade to PAPR(powered air purifying respirator) and recharge them on my new battery. That battery is worth more that the dang truck:D! I could ramble on here, but you get the picture:-laf! GregH

A perspective

Yep! This is what a Prius driver sees when he crawls out of his car and stands up on his roof:-laf

I had to air up the left front another 5# just to support the marine battery;)! I bought the battery 'cause it had MARINE in the description:D IT HAD to be GOOD!Oo. GregH

Yep, got the picture, saw some smoke last cold front we had!! :-laf 'Course, I'm sure you got a little smog from down here the last few weeks, as much cattle as I've been haulin' in the Dirty Dodge and the ol' KW w/3406 Cat. Enough smoke to choke a Prius down!! HA! I love electric cars. Especially at stop lights, when I can stand on it and blow smoke in the driver side and out the passenger... ..... usually gets me a nasty letter from the State, though..... (I wouldn't have thought they could have gotten my plate number through the haze... ... )

So how is the ultimate first gen coming? ;)

Good question!! :-laf

[HTMLAnd what is the definition of "marine gear"? Is that an outdrive (in the words of us land lubbers)?][/HTML]

Transmission, but only forward and reverse (and of course neutral). They are hydraulic, with friction clutches, and usually have a reduction output such as 1. 5:1, 2:1, 2. 5:1, meaning the engine turns 1. 5 revolutions to 1 for the propeller shaft, etc.

BorgWarner, ZF, Twin Disc, to name a few popular manufacturers.

These are for "inboard" applications where the pop shaft (driveshaft to a landlubber) and propeller are completely under the boat.

Don't know how the double double post happened

We have a smart butt in the house do we! :D

I once told a prius driver who was giving me heck about driving an old gas guzzling truck that first off it was a diesel, and secondly I was glad he was driving a prius. More fuel for my old truck. :D

Good question!! :-laf

OMG I am laghing so hard!:-laf:{

Ah. Gotcha. Following. So everything you need to get the boat running... . I like it! Bad plans forming in my head... . :D

To be honest, I do like the results that later generation emissions gear (of any manufacturer) seem to produce. Certainly much nicer to be around newer diesel vehicles. A simple visible example, less crud gets deposited on your garage doors and wall. I am just of the opinion that the engineers haven't quite gotten to the sweet spot as to reducing complexity to make all that happen.

I almost bought a Detroit:-laf 453-T/180 hp with a Jake but they were not on highway certified.

The Cummins was complete from fan to bellhousing. It also included a Holset air cooled air compressor, turbo w/ #16, aftercooler, belt drive vacuum pump (rotary), alt. starter, flywheel and a funky, generic install kit. It was cpl#856, 180 hp/457 tq. for $8,700. 00 from Cummins Southwest, El-Paso, Tx. I didn't have a core so I bought brand new.

Not much info was available at the time so I made a big mistake with using a 12' Chevy clutch and 280 VO Clark 5spd Transmission. The (gasser) four wheeler magazines touted the trannys as bullet proof..... wrong! I have lost 5th gear twice, and 3rd once and several clutches. The lining holds fine but the center hub breaks. I don't think the stupid sized off highway loads has anything to do with it:-laf or some on-highway loads.....

Hey there bschwarzli, where's my bonus 5 hp?:D I'll use it to smoke your goat for the first time in 3 years on Taylor diesel's dyno this coming Sunday. :-laf I only need a few more.

1st gen trucks are fun to drive as I drove a 1992 4x4 regular cab for 2 weeks while I replaced the clutch in my 2nd gen goat.

I may get one some day and use as a fair competition to bschwarzli. :-laf
