Question about adding electrical accessories to a 4th. Gen.

From Genos Garage catalog….

The ’06 and newer trucks have a CAN bus electrical system. The truck’s totally integrated power module (TIPM) computer can detect changes in the wiring harness (impedance, current draw, etc. ). After detecting 3 “faults”, the TIPM computer has to be replaced and is very expensive. There’s a TIPM reprogram from the Dodge dealer to increase the amount of current the TIPM will tolerate. The problem is that it only gives you THREE chances to “over do it” and then it goes south (expensive).

So, if I come directly off a battery with a “hot” lead and bring this to a fuse block and wire any accessories from there, the TIPM shouldn’t see any changes. (Someone please correct me if this is wrong) But, where can I get an “ignition on” source to send to a relay which will not affect the TIPM. From what I can find, a typical Bosch type relay pulls about . 16 Amps. Doesn’t sound like much, but will it cause problems?

Did Dodge, by chance, anticipate that owners may wish to add accessories and provide a terminal or post somewhere that is safe to draw ignition switched power from?

I used the keyed power for the in cab power socket to trigger my painless wiring block on the '06.

I mentioned to the Dodge Marketing Folk at the Columbus get together that a couple of powered triggers under the hood for add-on electrics such as a Painless Block would be a tremendous help when adding any electrical items to these trucks. He seemed to think that was not a bad idea so maybe we will see it sometime in the near future.

I tried at least... ... ;)

Mike..... you might try jumping the cigarrete lighter 20 amp "ignition on" fuse in your fuse panel inside the cab. My Painless 3 fuse ign on came with a fuse jumper and 2 amp fused wire that fires up the relay... ... . How would it know its not the cigarrete lightetr??? Got mine from Jegs, just wish I had gotten a bigger one. 2nd generation 12V Dooley

I am not a fan of the fuse jumpers, too loose IMHO.

I rate them right up there with a frigin' ScotchLock as far as reliability.

I know people use them with sucess, I just never liked the idea with blade fuses.

I hard wire and solder, only way to fly.

I used the Painless 7 circuit kit to allow for expansion, already using 6 of them... ... . :D

It might have been the cigarette lighter wire rather than the accessory power socket wire that I used, can't remember for sure.

All I remember is one is always hot, the other is keyed power.

sorry Mike ... ... meant to address my reply to Richard... . but yea, shoulda coulda woulda went with the 7 banger Painless. Filled up my 3 spot almost immediately. Cut off switch for the Air Dog II, on/off switch for the water meth system, aux lighting and bam... they were gone!

I have the seven ckt Painless Wiring Kit, from Genos. I used the wire going to the cigarette lighter for the trigger and direct off the battery for power. works great.

When picking up my 2012 Longhorn I inquired about this reflash of the electrical system and the service tech thought I was nuts! He did get on line to inquire about it but found nothing. What is the deal?
