I recently purchased a 2008 3500 QC and I am looking at options for mounting my CB and a CB antenna. I have a couple ideas for the CB which is going to require fabrication of mounting brackets to make it work the way I want it to since I can't find any commercial options. I am also looking at antenna mounts. Does anyone know where I can find some good options on this? I park the truck in a residential garage each night so clearance is also an issue.

TIA

First question to answer is, "Where do you want to mount it?" That will narrow down the types of mounting brackets and types of antenna you can use. When I installed mine I determined that I was not going to install it on the hood, as recommended by the CB shop. I decided I wanted to mount it on the bed, and since I knew I wasn't going to put a top on the bed I chose a stake hole mount with a top loaded Firestik (there is also an offset stake hole mount for those who have a camper or top on the bed). Because I have an automatic transmission I drilled a hole in the firewall where the clutch pedal assembly would go (excellent access port for passing cable and other things through the firewall as long as you have an automatic) for the antenna cable. I also remember reading about a mount, or accessory for a mount that is a quick release lever so you can pivot the antenna down for things like low parking garages and the like. It attaches between the antenna mount and the antenna. Here's the Firestik site:

Firestik Antenna Company Home Page

A few years ago Big Bob was also selling CB mounting plates there were very good. I haven't been as active here as I use be, so I don't know if he is still selling them.

I would suggest you do a search for old post, "Photos of 3rd Generation CB Antenna Install". I did a post and photo there on second page, 06-24-2008. I listed where they can be purchased. The same post has 3 or 4 pages of other members photos and information.

Mine is still working great, still almost flat SWR.

I know they are older than yours but you can get some ideas there.

Good Luck,

Merry Christmas,

Pat

Hey Pat, I just did that exact search (Photos of 3rd Generation CB Antenna Install) and got nothing but this thread. Any other idea's?

I mounted a 4' firestick on the a hood bracket that got from Firestick. I mounted it there because I had a fifth wheel trailer. By mounting on the front I was able to route the cable down thru the fender and front door hinge holes, then thru a hole that entered the cab. It was a very clean and easy install. If the antenna is to close the trailer by the rear window, you do not get full range. Mounting it up front reduces that problem. I also bought a quick disconnect for the antenna. This allow me to get the truck in the garage and keep people honest!

Mounting an antenna, and getting good performance from it are both concerns... typically, if a significant portion of the antenna is below the body line, the performance will be compromised.

I have done three different things over the years:

The first was to simply buy a magnetic Wilson 1000 or 5000 and place it in the center of the roof. This will typically get you a 1. 5:1 (or better) SWR without too much tuning. Be forewarned, if you run power; it will cause the paint to bubble under the magnet... a 3-pill bubbled the paint on my 99 using a Wilson 5000 magnet mount. I didn't like this because you have the coax draped over the truck (not really a clean look).

I then decided, since I was keeping the truck for a long time, to drill the roof and install the through-roof mount for the Wilson 1000/5000. This will typically get you a 1:1 SWR because you have a direct contact with the body, not an induced ground from a magnet. With aftermarket coax, I've ran a 5-pill with good results on this setup. And for whatever reason, this is the best setup for skip in my experience. The Wilsons are a nice antenna in the fact the whip/load can be removed from the mount for clearance in garages, etc. .

I currently run a 102-inch whip and spacer (spacer in place of the required 6-inch spring) mounted on the front bed rail (dead center of the truck). I like this because the 102 is practically indestructible and stupidly simple... no coils, no capacitors, no snake oil. My SWR is 1:1 on all channels, even with almost two feet obstructed by the cab.

As for the radio, depending on what you want, look at the BigBob mounts from Geno's that mount to the center console. I ran one of these for a long time (still have a meter mounted to it). I currently have my radio mounted to the side of the hump, near the driver's right foot.

Thanks for the advice from all. I was leaning towards mounting it on the drivers side of the hood with an antenna around 4'. I have seen brackets marketed on different websites made for use on the hood but the one's I saw stated they wouldn't work on a 2008 due to the hood style. The second choice would be a stake hole bed mount but most of the antenna will be blocked by the cab. I will check out the links provided and complete the search recommended.

One other question, I have looked at the narrow CB mount available through Geno's Garage but I'm not sure my current CB (Cobra 29LTD Classic) will work on it. Any thoughts? I have had this radio for nearly 20 years and is has always worked great for me but its size makes mounting options in this truck limited.

I believe I have the narrow mount because of the 6-spd? Been a while since I placed that order...

It holds (or has held) several large chassis radios such as a Connex 4600, Uniden Grant, and Galaxy DX959, as well as my Uniden PC76 (same size as a Cobra 29). The radio's bracket may extend over the edges of the mount, but the mounting holes will hit the bracket without any concern. Keep in mind the BigBob mounts will wiggle somewhat, but placing something between the seat and mount will eliminate that issue.

I used the narrower CB mount because I did not like the larger one, it just look way to big. I have a small Uniden Pro 520 mounted on the narrow mount. Along with a small speaker, and mic. They all fit just perfect and don't take up alot of room. :)
