MERRY CHRISTMAS guys! just ordered a afe intake manif. and was wondering if ther is any REAL WORLD gains from this mod other than underhood bling. the adds say 15 hp, 35 lb ft but is that on unmodified 5. 9's or advertising smoke and mirror stuff? the 5. 9 is a low rpm torque monster that does not rely on high airspeed, but on volume created by turbo pressure, and restrictions created by changes in air column direction are overcome by boost pressure, (thats why the CUMMINS gus didnt cast a big baloon shaped manifold and hang tuned headers on the thing in the first place. All the mods I have made on the last 5 td's have responded WELL, (thats why I keep buying them) just wanted to see if anyone has installed one of these and noticed any gains. thanks,TDR members, you are a wealth of info.

There are lots of post's/threads dealing with your question. Do a search, you will find pro's & con's.

I installed GDP's intake horn, and though I do not have dyno proof, I did notice quicker low end spoolup and seat of the pants grunt.

Merry Christmas, Jess

For several years I've been saying that there is no noticeable difference, however I have an automatic. People with manual transmissions say there is. On a dyno, most of the power gain is actually in the lower rpm range (oddly). Since an automatic zips past the "beneficial" rpm range, there doesn't seem to be much to write home about. You have a manual, so I would go for it. Looks nice, too.

Does this one have ports tapped in if you want to run meth or a boost gauge? My CFM+ has 3 or 4.

I got this one from a company on ebay a few yrs back, think it was about $150. Could put in as many ports as you want, i just went with one for the boost gauge. I couldnt tell a noticeable difference, but as stated above, you dont have a choice to hold in a given rpm range with an auto, so with manual there may be a noticeable difference. I mainly got mine for the cool factor when you pop the hood.

volsfan- worth the $ if just for the cool factor. The bling just reflects your hard work and attention to detail. Not many "rat rod" dodges!!

You should notice the power at lower rpms (right where our engine is making most torque), lower EGTs (approx 50-100F when towing) and increased response for turbo spool.

The CFM and the ATS showed better gains than the aFe, but the aFe is better than stock...

To show gains on the dyno for add ons imho you should be using a load type dyno and be extremely careful to have an accurate base run that is repeatable and of course as careful to see repeatable data after the up grade. Very few owners will do this from what I have seen. Most are cringing as they see their poor baby loaded hard on the dyno and making pass after pass.

Testing in this manner showed the AFE (3rd gen) made 50lbft at 2k rpm on a modded truck and 17lbft on a stock 06. The 2nd gen does not repond as well since the oem design is not so bad and the head does not flow as well either

well, thanks guys, its interesting to see the REAL assesments of the stuff we spend REAL money on, the mfgrs woul have us all thinking their products will cure cancer if we bolt them on our trucks, but really ,I did learn that, other than BLING, there IS a possibility of SOME power gain, and thats more than expected,so thanks again, once again proving the value of our forum. PS and this airhorn WONT wear out!!
