I could see and it would be Possible to Run 5. 9 03/04 in 6. 7, But I will never run 6. 7 Injectors in 03/04 head Piston Cam. 6. 7 Injector just will Not work in 04. 5/07 5. 9 OS. Piston Cam.

Why's that Todd?

In a thread on CompD, Zach Hamilton says the 5. 9 ECM runs 6. 7 injectors fine. Ryan Bean said they run, but run like crap. Joe tried his stock ECM and no dice; hooked his standalone up and rescaled or changed something and they run fine. And another guy runs 5. 9 injectors in his 03 6. 7 with no issues.

There seems to be few guys that have done it that I can get info from, so I'm stuck with forums.

Have You been on top Togwotee lately? How much snow at antelope flats?

Thanks Todd for taking the time to post pics and explain all that. Would you say the 6. 7's are an improvement? Maybe more robust or greater flow properties?

Scotty

I am Not an Expert on CR Injectors. I rarely break them Down, the 6. 7 CP3 is big improvement over 5. 9 CP3, doubt any reason to state which (Injector) is better.

To many difference fitments. its just to risky, the spray pattern, the Piston bowl, the Tolerances in CR is just to tight, eventually some problem will develop $$$$.

Appreciate the pics. Looks like the 0-ring is higher on the body on the 6. 7, and the nozzle is longer. I think I'll have to pop the head and grab some pics of the nozzle protrusion and such. Good time for me to do some side-by-side comparisons on stuff like this I think.

For clarification, you're thinking it may be fine with the 03 injectors and ECM on the 6. 7? I'm aware the 04. 5-07 nozzles are totally wrong for the 6. 7 pistons. I'm led to believe that swapping 03/04 nozzles on those are fine with the later ECM also.

I was just up on Togwotee last Friday on the way to get my new 84 crew. There was probably foot and a half roughly. I wasn't really paying attention to be honest. Road was a sheet of ice. Go sledding up there?

Again, I'm no expert, but the 6. 7 injectors are supposedly better, built for higher pressures and apparently have a refined pintle design to better hold up.

Got 'er out today. Fought the trans and fought the engine. Needless to say, I won't be pulling another engine with the head on:mad:

The crank looks like it got a bit hot, supporting my theory of a failed oil pump causing the failure, IMO.

Tomorrow I start swapping things from the 5. 9 to the 6. 7, and taking stuff off the 6. 7;)

Now that's carnage! I agree it looks like the oil went away but why do you suppose the oil pump would have quit? Oil system failures are rare with Cummins.

The 03 is 100% stock. It has on occasion had a Smarty on it, but it's never turned more than 3200. When it let go it was on stock programming and had been for a couple months. Why it lost the oil pump... just a fluke failure I think.

Got the wiring harness off, as well as the EGR cooler. I don't envy anyone doing the deletes with the engine in the truck; it was tricky enough with full access.

Not sure what this line is for. It goes from the exhaust manifold to the thermostat housing:

Also got the cover off, and unfortunately I can't run the 6. 7 valvecover. :{ I was really hoping I could pop the hood and BAM it say 6. 7L Cummins right there, front and center. I thought that'd be pretty cool myself

That port in the exhaust manifold is for the exhaust back pressure sensor. It has a small tube that runs fwd and the sensor is near the thermostat.

Why wont the 6. 7 manifold fit?

Thanks. I guess I can either put it on or just block it. Either way I won't have a connection for that sensor.

Edit: the 6. 7 valvecover won't sit flush on the head because of the 3 injector plugs on the drivers side. I'll take some pics tomorrow

Nice project.
By the way, what's is the story on the 84 crew? Is it a Dodge?
Merry Christmas

Thanks. Yes, the 84 crew is a Dodge, W350. Think this 5. 9 CR, rebuilt and a G56 will be nice under it's hood.
