cummins ism overhaul

Vermont's last damaged road to open 12/2/11

The Cummins 5. 9 or 6. 7 engine have been the standard diesel engine in F-650/750 for several years.

Furd Powerjoke owners prefer to pretend otherwise.

Bill,

I thought GM offered the 7 liter Cat in their so-called mediums and Furd offered the Cummins. Did Furd offer either?

I did see an article on the Diesel Technology Forum about the V10 being offered as an option in the 650. One of it's attractions was the availability of a propane option. Personally, I don't see the attraction of this option to take advantage of the current (and probably temporary) price spread between gas and diesel fuel. Propane may have a cost advantage, but limits your travel options. I doubt a V10 will ever see 100K miles in that service. When the next fuel or dollar crisis hits, and gas becomes $5-6-7/gallon, you won't be able to give those trucks away.

The 5. 9 cummins was the base engine in the ford mediums for years. . Back in the early /mid 90's it was the only engine option. . The ford inlines, as well as the v8 cat and detroit's were dropped due to emissions. . Latter the cummins, powerstroke, and cat's were all an option. . Last few years it's been back to only cummins. . Personally i think the gasser option is a very good idea under certain app's. . I have ran many a 427/429 gas powered medium to over 200k with little or no issue's. .

I'm not Bill but I'll bail in... :D

Yes, they did.

GM started out with the 3116 CAT as an exclusive CAT (as best as I can recall) offering in Medium Duty trucks and School Bus Chassis. Some Thomas bus chassis had them as well. I don't think Ford had access to it.

Then the 3126 (Newer Designation is C7) was offered by CAT and was available in GM, Ford, Freightliner, Western Star, Sterling and PACCAR.

As far as I know (Bill, correct me if I am wrong) Navistar never offered the C7 as they already had the very durable DT466 engine design as their Medium Duty offering.

Lasted until CAT's withdrawal from the truck engine business. The last of the C7 line of engines were troublesome, our local Ryder shop has some and they are working on them steady, a lot of piston troubles.

Mike. :)

Yep, Mike you are correct. Navistar (International) had a better engine in the DT466 than either the CAT 3116 or the later 3126 and never made it availabe in their medium duty line. It was easy to sell the DT466 vs. the CAT 3116 and 3126.

By the time the CAT 3116 was made available in GM medium duty trucks, the infamous Detroit V-8 Fuel Pinchers had already done enough damage to the GM medium duty trucks, they never came back as much of a factor in the truck market.

What does the 8. 2 have to do with Gm being much of a factor in the medium market? As i recall through the 80' and 90's, Gm and Ford fought for the number 2 sales position quite often. . Freightliner gained a lot of ground in the late 90's also. . More often then not Navistar held number one position. . I dont recall gm having any real trouble with medium sales until the late 2000's. . This would be a result from increaseing competition, from other medium trucks. .
