I like the AirDog, but it has always been a noisy sonofagun!

A friend at a local shop that installs Fass pumps said the same about them until they found a sump that installs on the bottom of the tank. This guy claims that due to the fuel being gravity fed instead of pulled up the draw straw there is less strain on the pump and therefore less noise.

Anybody heard of this? Does it really work? Are there any drawbacks?

Thanks

Andy

My Fass 95 was noisy until I changed the relief valve spring to one about half the strength of the original. It is now as quiet as the vacuum pump for the cruise control.

You have not provided any information to really diagnose your problem...

I see one of three things: you're sucking air and the pump is cavitating, you're intake is restricted and the pump is cavitating, or you have a return issue and you're dead-heading the pump.

That's assuming the pump itself isn't bad... which happens. Sometimes they have bad bearings, pump rotors, etc... . and they make noise.

Thanks Steve. I had no idea what could be causing it, thats why I posted here. It seems many times there are answers here the OEMs don't even know. Another reason to try this site first!

To cut down on the Vibration noise of the pump mounted on the frame. I installed two pieces of mud flap between the pump mount and the frame of the truck. The Mud flap was 1/4 in thick off of a big truck mud flap. Cut WAY DOWN on the noise in the cab.

I had the same prob with my raptor 150, it was noisey! Put the piece of rubber inbetween it and frame , didnt help . they insisted it was sucking air but when i unhooked fuel line from it i could siphon the whole tank if i wanted. They still insisted it was sucking air! I finally installed a Hellmann sump with -10 lines and still noisey as hell! Finally sold it and went with a fuelab pump and have been happy ever since!

I could only hear mine when I turn the key on and was waiting for the pre heat to go off. Like you said I could not hear it with the truck running and usually have the getto blaster on anyway.

I hear mine liek Big Nasty does, when waiting for pre heat to go off. I do hear it when the truck is running and I'm standing along side, otherwise it isnt' noticable. I like the idea of insulating the mount against the frame, I did this to my Viair air compressor and what a difference a little piece of rubber absorbing the vibration can do for noise control.

My raptor wan real noisy, i could hear it going down the road. The kid i sold it to put it on a vp truck and can eaven hear it over the engine. Not sure why cause if heard ones that were very quiet.

I have never heard the FASS pumps on ether of my pickups when the engine is running. Maybe my ears aren't as good as they used to be, maybe I installed them correctly??

They redesigned the newer FASS pumps... they supposedly aren't nearly as loud as they were at one point. My original install was a FASS 95/150 in 2004, it could be heard with the truck running (even with exhaust work)... it was loud.

I did nothing special to the AirDog 100 I currently have installed, I can't hear it with the truck running...

steved; Greetings. I've read the recent F/A separator blogs here and am getting educated for sure. The feature AirDog didnb't seem to mention is that their AD II regulation eliminates most of the fuel return flow, thus eliminating the majority of entrained air, is this deduction correct? Is frame mounting chosen to provide a positive suction head to the pump, or too little space under the hood?

Thanks much.

I have the AirDog II 165 system on my truck. The original pump motor was a liitle noisy from the day I installed it. The pump motor gave out when driving home form work one day. . Pureflow who makes the AirDog sent me a new pump under warranty, this new pump is extremely quiet, leaving me to believe the original was faulty all along. I have the rubber mat between the pump and frame as well. I believe the pump is close to the tank as it is easier to push than pull. I've run my tank down to about 4 or so gallons before filling up, no fuel starvation thus far.

Where can I get said spring?

If AD is anything like FASS, they may have a replacement spring they'll send you for free.

At RSCurtis suggestion, I changed the spring in my FASS to quiet it down after the great people at FASS sent me a new shorter but stiffer spring, check ball, gasket and wear plate completely free of charge;
