Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting 10mm Ammo

I am interested in getting a trip up for Halibut and Salmon fishing in June of 2013. I am looking for any information you guys can provide as far as best guides, services, best area, etc. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I have read for hours on the internet but would like some first hand experience before planning the trip. I know it will be expensive but I want to do it right form the start. Thanks

LFarmer: My wife and I drove to Homer last July. I fished 3 days. 1 day with Bob's Trophy Charters

Bob's Trophy Charters | Hailbut Charter Fishing, Salmon Charter Fishing, and Combination Halibut, Lingcod and Rockfish Fishing Charters = caught Cod, Pollock, & Halibut. Tried for some Salmon with no luck but the wind didn't help. Spent 2 days with Captain Pete - no web site - Tele # 907-235-2911. Best boat of the 2 - has a head just inside the cabin door - real easy to access and roomy. Caught Halibut, Cod & Salmon.

Darn Phil,

You have been out of Alaska so long you no longer remember how to spell Kachemak Bay?

Big news on the Halibut front. The commercial quota is dropping like a rock due to possible overestimation of the stock size in previous years. The available fish are getting smaller. Charter limits are down to 1 fish in Southeast. Discussions are out there for expanding those restrictions westward. June might be a little early for the best salmon fishing, but still reasonable. If you can swing getting to Kodiak, there are more robust options, but getting to the Island is costly either on the Alaska Marine Highway or by air (from Anchorage).

Check this one out, Nelson "Trapper" Young was a friend in High School. Always was an outdoorsman! He eventually bought land beside the Salmon River in Pulaski, NY and started a fishing guide business. He also bought a spot in Alaska and started a fishing and hunting camp up there too.

The guy really knows his stuff and loves what he does.

Can't offer any suggestions for getting the fish, just one for getting them home. When we went (3 rigs) some years back, we caught far more than we could fit in our collective RV freezers. The fish was vacuum packed and flash frozen by the RV park facility but shipping it home was cost prohibitive. We ended up buying a small freezer from Sears. We filled it up and kept it plugged it in anytime we weren't on the road until we got home to CA. We've eaten all the fish but still use the freezer at home.

We use the cheap styro coolers that you can buy at ANY gas station. Take a sheet of DRY ICE that you can get at an ice house. Break it into smaller pieces and rap it up in about 5 whole sheets of newspaper and put it in the bottom of the cooler. Add just a thin layer of regular ice and put the Vacuumed pack meat in and fill all the voids with crushed ice in about 2 hours you will have a block of frozen what ever it is you put in the cooler.

We do the same thing on trail for frozen foods only use one of the panniers as long as you dont keep opening and closing it. It will stay frozen for a remarkably long time ONE WORD OF CAUTION YOU HAVE TO LEAVE SOME WAY OF THE GAS OF THE MELTING DRY ICE TO ESCAPE OR YOU WILL HAVE A EXPLOSION OF WHAT EVER IT WAS IN JUST POKE A FEW SMALL HOLES IN THE STYRO ICE CHEST AND IT WILL BE FINE.
