Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting Lady Smith

HHhuntitall, Its "supposed" to fit Warner Sights. I have a left handed Warner Long range for a leftie Palma build. (I believe it will become an F-class or a varmint rifle!, cant sling up anymore)The aperture adapter is threaded. I bought that sight and base from Alan Warner back about 19 years ago.

I imagine you should pull the aperture insert, measure the threads and call Sinclair and ask the tech. staff, to be sure.

There was a write up on that development, in Precision Shooting, within the last year or so. GregH

In the mid 1980s I built a Remington XP100 in . 458 x 2" that gave a 400 grain Speer 2175 fps, and a 500 gr. cast 1844 fps. The write up was in Handloader magazine. I built a reinforced wood stock for it after it destroyed a few factory nylon stocks.

Joe Donnelly, Yep, I probably seen that issue. I used to subscribe to Handloader!

That . 458X2" was and is a cannon it its own right. That would be far to much hand cannon fer me:-laf

The . 458 X 2" has been around quite a spell. The . 450 Marlin case is similar except with a wider belt and +0. 1" length. A Proprietary safety precaution?

I do like Marlins updating the 1895 Receiver for that new big bore round. According to M. L. McPherson, Marlin uses a 60*V thread on the barrel extension for this round. The other Marlin chambers still use the square thread barrel tenon. A design Circa the late 1800's, found in 1873 Springfields, Sharps, 1903 Springfields etc. . I hate cutting square threads!

If I was to rebarrel an 1895 for a custom application, I would start with the 1895M and use the upgraded receiver. Just replace the feeding parts and bolt for the correct application.

As far as a Hand Cannon? I'll stick with the . 454 Casull. Thats about as much abuse as this old man can handle:D! GregH

Man of many talents, Mr. Donnelly. Can't say as I have ever been much of a fan of the bolt action pistols..... Certainly would be a killing machine, I suppose.....

Greg, that recoil wouldn't be quite so bad if you weren't trying to break 2,000fps with those 225gr bullets!!! :D NOT EXACTLY an "old man" load..... :-laf

Ohhhh noooo! I thought all the 1895 large bolt guns had the 60* v threads!!! I've got this 1895GS in 45/70 I was gonna rebarrel..... do I need to trade it off?!? I think we've had this conversation before, and I was going to unscrew the barrel to find out... ... haven't got to that yet... .

HHhuntitall, Its the 260 Gr Noslers at 2000 FPS that really bust my hands:-laf!

Them little bitty 200 Gr. varmint bullets are just plinkin loads fer paper and runnin' jackrabbits:D!!

Square threads or 60* V's? Well pull that tube and find out:D! Let us know what you find! I have a hand ground REX 95 square thread tool, if ya need to borrow it! GregH

The Pack is getting thinner... That kind of looks like the same wolf in all pics.

Your making me JUST A LITTLE nervous about the BIG BAD WOLF STORY and no im not little red but I do CARRY A BFG when I go to the mountains. I use to think that it was just LIONS NO TIGERS AND BEAR'S now you add WOLVES to the equation

Hand cannon

This is presently my favorite resolver. A Freedom Arms . 454 Magnum. It also has a . 45 Colt Cylinder.

The rounds in the picture are handloads. On the left, is a . 45 Colt with Hornady 200 Gr. FTX bullet. On the right is the . 454 Magnum loaded with the 260 Gr. Nosler Partition HG (about 2000 fps at the muzzle).

This is about as much recoil as I can handle and still be able to place my shots. There are far bigger rounds, but the . 454 Magnum hand loaded with a 395 Gr. slug is about like hanging on the the breech block of a 155MM howitzer. The question is; can you place your shots, recover and continue firing, under duress? I dont have that kind of grip strength. GregH

That was a healthy Kitty, What a tail!

Supposedly quite a few of them around here also, but they are somewhat shy around humans, or just so stealthy we don't see them...

Panther Tracks!

Late one evening, I decided to go work in the shop. Back when I lived on the same property, some years ago.

There is a big rock outcrop right outside the door off the porch entrance. It was dark and I just headed out to go to work. I got about 10' past that rock pile and the hair stood up on the back of my neck. I sensed something but couldnt see any thing. There was no moon and it was cloudy. Very dark in the trees. I wasnt packin iron so I just took my sweet time with every fiber of my body saying DANGER! Anyway, I got to the shop and worked a few hours. After completing my chore, I opened all the doors with the lights on, went back to the house and got a big light and my pistol. Came back out, shut everything down and walked back into the house. No feelings or sightings. The next day, upon inspection, I found lion tracks around the base of that rock pileOo.

Them critters are SNEAKY!

I'd really like to hunt them. They are quite plentiful where there are mule deer. We have lots of Both. It would take a real focused effort to make a kill on a Cat. You are really restricted to Toms. Colorado requires that a perspective Lion hunter take a DOW Mountain Lion Class before you can apply for a permit. GregH

That does it IM SLEEPING WITH THE 45-70 IN BED WITH ME.

I know this is an old pic, and much speculation around it. There are lot's of bad characters out and about.

I think back, when I took my Family out to some very remote areas on our ATV's, without any protection, Our Lord was definitely looking out for us.

I know about the BAD THINGS in the woods and have not been in the woods without SOME KIND OF GUN in a very long time. At an early age I found the value of packing protection. :D
