Looking at a fuel PSI gauge for the 1990.

What is correct fuel PSI after the lift pump?

I ask as they have 0-15, 0-30, and 0-100. I know it is not the last one but always good to ask!

Thanks,

Robert

It depends on how much risk you're willing to take. I think about 12 psi max is a safe number for a VE. If you push toward the 15 - 18 psi + range, you begin to get on the verge of pushing fuel past a seal and diluting your oil quickly. You can loctite the seal, "dimple" it in place, etc to chance running higher pressure.

If it was me, I'd get the 0 - 30 gauge and set it on 12 :)

I think Bob is correct. I remember 5 as a min, but don't quote me on that.

And the old VW diesels (circa 1980) that also used a VE pump, had no lift pump.

Eric,

Not really wanting to usb the limits. More wanting to make sure I am not too low as I add more and more fuel with nothing but stock fuel supply. ;)

Stock is about 7 psi iirc

OK. That answers the question. Thanks!

I've been running a 1st gen piston lift pump for several years now with no problems. My understanding is that this style of pump maxes out at 15psi as opposed to the 2nd gens 30 psi. These pumps are rebuildable and are made by Carter. I like it well enough to look for arebuild kit just to have a spare.

If you are going to put a pressure gage on the diaphram pump you need to dampen the pulses or the gage won't last. There is lots of info about that in the archives.

Yes. I learn about the snubbers when I did a 24v early on before there was a lot of info on that issue! ;) lol

Thanks for the thought though!! Good call!

I just got a brand new Autometer fuel gauges and was unaware of this issue... where do you recomend tieing into the fuel lines and what should be used to dampen the pulses?

A Autometer snubber (or any hydraulics 1/8 npt to 1/8 npt snubber) should work.

As for location, I have not really looked into the manual yet to see where I will pull it from.
