Well, like most threads on TDR, I learned a few things.

I had reason to stop at a national chain this morning. I have always found this particular establishment to be exceedingly well run, it's one of my favorite places to shop.

  • This business had a few batteries on the shelf that appeared to be a year plus old. However...
  • The vast majority of the batteries had date codes within the last few months.

My suspicion, less common "group sizes" end up spending a long time on the shelf. (I don't know how batteries for our trucks fare in that regard. )

Cat premium SLA

I just went through this. I replaced Optima red tops that had been replaced under warranty and were bad already after 2 years. NO MAS OPTIMAS for me!

After researching this site, I settled on the Cat group 65 Premium sealed lead acid battery.

They are built for the rigors of off road construction equipment and are 880 cca.

Here in LAS, the Cat distributor gets a premium price on things and I paid about $130. 00 each.

We shall see about the durability and longevity of these going forward.

Wow, what a smart idea!

I have hydraulic hoses fabricated at the local Caterpillar parts distribution center, even though I don't own any CAT equipment. Would never have thought of buying batteries there. I will check this out.
