I received my recall notice two weeks ago and the dealership had to order the part and then I was out of town. Anyway, got it done this morning and glad I did.

I talked to the mechanic who also happens to be a good friend (and great mechanic).

He said the check is with a clinometer and if it is more than five degrees out, then the tie rod has to be replaced. Mine was a 15 degrees. I had notice over the weekend that the left front wheel was out a lot further at the bottom than I had remembered seeing. It was very noticeable. Any, he said it would have broken off and probably sooner than later.

That was closer than I like to cut it with steering components.

That symptom you describe would be due to a worn upper BJ, the tie rod should have nothing to do with camber.

You are right. The ball joints are OK because I asked him and I checked them after your post. I pulled it in my shop and the wheels line up now... . the front doesn't appear to stand out at the bottom.

I called the mechanic and he said it was the angle of the tie rod end that was measured. I misunderstood.

What I must have been seeing was the rear of the wheel out when I looked down the truck. Heck if I know. I looked at it in the shop and it appears normal now.

The first 200 miles with the new tie rod end, the steering was a little stiff. I thought they had introduced the wander problem to my truck. Now it is driving pretty much normal again.

Took mine in last week and they replaced the tie end. Ironically I had it there two months ago and I told them it didn't steer the same and steering clunked on turns and they swore up and down that it was fine... knowing this recall was on it's way I asked them to look at tie rods and they said everything was perfect.

What a surprise then that everything wasn't perfect and they didn't just adjust it, they had to replace it.

Symptoms that I described to them before are all gone! I have yet to leave a dealership with any sort of peace of mind after a visit.
