Thermostat Swaps?

Antifreeze Question

I agree with Jim, a boost gauge is cheap and should be used with any power adder, especially if you run the turbo on #4, but even on #1 and SW7 you should have a boost gauge to tow.

I have just backed it down to #3 and will install a boost guage,.

The 3rd gen trucks (5. 9 and 6. 7, from what I can tell) use a 190° thermostat. This thermostat opens at 190°±3°, and isn't full open until 207°, with a max allowed temp of 225°.

When I am pulling steep hills I will see up to 215° with my current setup in 6th gear, 5th tops out at about 211-213°, as read on a OBDII reader. 200° is not even full open and nothing to worry about.

The 4th gen's use a 200° thermostat, and I can't find any info from Cummins on it, but if it holds the trend of 2nd and 3rd gen thermostats it will be full open about 215-217° and have a max allowed temp of 235°.

On the other side, min operating temp for full power operation in 160° for all models and thermostats.

I've always thought 200* was crazy for longevity. When I deleted I changed to a 180*. Temp stays around 179-184 now. It is a thermo from a 6. 7 in a row crop sprayer w no EGR or DPF. It has a wide opening and is an exact fit. I can look and get the part # if anyone is interested.

The 200° stat should provide better economy and power, and I highly doubt it effects longevity, but it's hard to say.

Send that part number!

That sounds like a good idea. My temps are always around 200 regardless of outside temp or what Im towing (16K tops). Like the idea of a cooler engine over the long haul.
