In January I installed a set of Larry B's super contacts in the starter on my '06. Last week the starter began making the "clicking" sound when the key was turned to "start". Had time today to yank the starter out and work on it. When I installed the contacts originally they seemed to have a point sticking up at the outer two corners of each contact. Current was being passed only through those two corners on each contact. Today I decided to file the contacts flat so they would make better... contact. Yup, it worked, starter spins over as soon as the key is turned, just like it should. So next time I think I need new contacts I may just file them down and see what happens.

You've got it... . 40 something years ago when I was in my first DC electrical lab we were actually taught to file ignition points, starter contacts, to correct problems and one of the key factors to extending life when new parts were installed was to file the two contacts parallel so they would function correctly. Because ignition points were tungsten carbide special files were used. .

Yep, I still have an ignition point file in my tool box, but I haven't filed a set of points in years. :D

An ignition file has always been in my toolbox since graduating from auto/diesel school 30 years ago. Used it on the farm for several years on the many vehicles that still had points. Today we only have two older trucks that still have points, everything else is electronic ignition or diesel. The worst engine for points was the John Deere 105 combines, those things went through points like they were candy.
