Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Possible starter problem

Hello to all- Just recently my 2001 Dodge Ram diesel has started exhibiting starting problems. That is, when I turn the key I just get a clicking sound. I assume that clicking sound is from the Bendix pulling in. Up until now, if I keep trying, it will eventually start. Yesterday, it would not start at all. My batteries are good. My question is: Do you think it would be OK to try and replace the solenoid (Bendix) contacts or just replace the starter? The truck has 176K miles on it. Who would you recommend that I purchase the solenoid contacts from if I go that route. Who sells the best starter if that route is recommended? Thanks to all who take time to reply!

Pull the starter apart I am going to guess you will find one contact severely worn the other not so much with the plunger having a fair amount of wear. Genos sells the contact package

Bob's advice is correct. If you do a "Search" on this forum using the key words "starter contacts", you will find days if not weeks of reading material.

He is refereing to the solenoid. The stock contacts are small. Get them from Genoe's or Fosters truck parts. But install the heavy duty contacts.

Thanks to those that replied. I ordered a new plunger and contacts from Geno's. I hope to be running again in about a week. I feel good in the fact that my original starter lasted 11 years with no prior problems. Take care :-laf
