Running a little HOT, thermostat? fan? no leaks

Actually the weep hole is on the bottom I contacted M Wilson (parts man extraordinaire) and he said that I could see it with a mirror and a flashlight but I couldn't. My hands are so big that I couldn't feel it either. There was no other place the leak could be coming from so we changed it and it worked.

The water pump impeller is S. S. It will not wear out. If the pump is not leaking or squeaking it's OK. If it's leaking then you will notice your o'flow tank loosing level. One thing to remember when changing coolant - NO TAP WATER! Use only distilled/deionized water.

If you flushed your system with tap water you left a couple of gallons of it in the system which won't drain out. A little calcium in tap water goes a long way plugging tubes or reducing flow through the radiator.

When I've done mine I had trouble getting the system full. Had to drive it a couple of times and let the radiator suck some of the coolant from the o'flow bottle then fill the bottle to the fill mark. Hope some of this helps.

Some place on this site a post showed a WP impeller what was missing blades mite not corrode but missing blades is more than likely just as bad. Do a search on water pumps and you mite find the picture it looked pretty ugly.

I disagree, the blocks water inlet is the lowest point in the engines cooling system. If you drain the radiator, you drain the block. The blocks total capacity is only 11 quarts, if there is 2 gallons left after you drain it, you have only drained 3 quarts out??

The cooling system holds 29. 5 qts. I can just fill a 5 gal bucket by draining the radiator & o'flow tank. 5x4 = 20 qts. Leaving 9 qts. still in the system. I park the truck on a slight decline to get all I can. My 97 was the same way. What am I doing wrong?

fyi, some water pumps do not have weep holes. i think that not all of the wp are equal. my stock one lasted 120k and didnt have weep hole and looked perfectly fine, but under a routine inspection i found it was real loose. to the point the impeller was hitting the block. when i replaced it the truck would regularly get a tick over 200*. fast forward another 100k and it the wp started weeping so i got another pump from a different parts store and now my truck stays in the temp range as the factory pump. each time i changed the pump i did a fluid flush with ro water.

RO water - good idea. Didn't think of that. Actually I use filtered rain water- cheap. Trouble is it hasn't rained much down here.

i have a neighbor that cleans commercial fish tanks that filters his own ro. im lucky he gives it to me, but he charges $5 a gallon to his customers.

I don't think you are doing anything wrong. I would say 29. 5 qts. is a mis-print, more like 6 gal. The next time you change it, plug the radiator outlets and fill with measured water. Probably holds about 3 gal.

My owners manual lists 27 qts, the shop has it @ 29. 5 qts. (Maybe the shop is including the o'flow bottle). I am pretty sure there are some plugs (maybe freeze plugs) lower on the block which might drain the remaining 2+ gals. But, I aint gona mess with em. Are you wanting me to fill the block with the Rad. plugged? Of course if I can't drain the block completely it will only hold 3 gal.

I just suggested you plug the radiator so you could fill it and see what, only the radiator capacity actually is. My Cummins manual says the block holds 11. 1 quarts. So if the block is 11 quarts, heater 1 quart, fill bottle 1 quart then whatever just the radiator capacity is, should be close to what your system capacity is. I kinda doubt it is 29. 5 or even 27 quarts, but maybe.....
