More changes?

Hello out their

If it is anything like our systems at work, then what happened is the software had gotton dated and was fighting with newer versions of everything else out there. You have to upgrade to keep things working, like it or not.

Quick Navigation problem

Steve, thanks for all the work you have done to keep this forum running so well.

I have a problem using the Quick Navigation at the bottom of all screens.

As an example;

I am in the 3rd gen forum, post on tires.

I want to use the quick navigation to go to Pay it forward

I click on the arrow on the quick navigation bar

A pull down box comes up for navigation to other forums

But immediatelly the page reloads and i am back at the top of the 3 gen forum, post on tires.

Thanks for any help you can give... ... ... . when your rested and have time

Formatting funny on my tablet, but no rush. Get some well deserved rest!!

Rest up buddy, it will all look better in the morning (or afternoon depending on how long you have been up babysitting it)!!!!!!

Good job so far.

I second the dropping of including last names. A few details and a last name, and I can email you a google street view of your house. Some people would take that as a threatening act, & in today's world, that's a road no one wants to take. The general anonymity fosters more participation. I know it's a lot more effort to police, but the extra work on your part makes for a more more enjoyable web site & forum.

Steve,

I see what might be a problem.

When I signed on this morning and clicked on "NEW POSTS" the new posts appearing included the political forum threads.

Does that happen with everyone including those who don't frequent or care to read the political threads?

The biggest problem I am having is when I get on and navigate through 3-4 screens the site suddenly freezes up completely. Nothing will load at all for several minutes, I have to leave TDR completely for a little while then log back in again and it will work for a bit before freezing again. Anyone else having this problem?

Sometimes mine does the same thing, also sometimes the back button will not work. However I had the same issue with the old system. Maybe my computer doesn't like the vbulletin hardware??

The servers are going to be working overtime for the next week or so reindexing all of the posts on the site. This is an EXTREMELY intensive process and will slow things down until it's complete. There's really no way around this.

I'll be eliminating the political forum from new posts searches as soon as I can get to it - I just arrived here in Tennessee on our vacation and I'm running on 4 hours of sleep since friday morning. I'll probably get to that tomorrow - it's the next thing on my to do list. It's going to take a while to rewrite the hacks that I wrote that allow individual users to choose what they see in searches so until I can get that complete we'll just be eliminating political posts from searches.

What was wrong with the old site? It worked... do not mess with a working system.

The old version of vBulletin is soon to be non supported - as it is it is only getting very minimal support at this time. Over time hackers learn how to exploit old versions of software and the developers after a time stop supporting upgrades for old versions to deal with that. So if you want a site to continue to live you have no choice but to upgrade periodically to newer versions of the software. Otherwise some day you may come to the site to find that malware has taken the site down and have it be non recoverable or down for significant periods of time (as in months) while it is restored and upgraded to newer versions of the software.

Also, if you want the site to continue to live we have to bring in new members on a regular basis - if we didn't the site would die. New members expect new features and for a site to be up to date. This question has been asked every time we've upgraded the software. To give you an idea of what the site would look like had we not upgraded take a look here: http://web.archive.org/web/20000301...bodieselregister.com/cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate.cgi and here http://web.archive.org/web/20000301015409/https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ . That's what the site looked like in March of 2000 and when we upgraded it from that we had the same questions - why did you upgrade something that was working well? Take a look there and ask if someone coming to the site today if they saw a site that looked like that if they'd use it or move on (or if the site had looked like that when you came would you have stayed)? We have to move with the times in order to keep the site alive and productive for the members - both new and old.

Steve,

All I have is a solid red bar. No writing on it at all for log out. Tried rebooting no luck.

Do you see a search box in there or anything? What browser and version are you running? I've tested it with Safari, the latest version of IE, IE8, and the latest version of Firefox and I see the Log Out button on all of those.

I had an PM notification so I clicked on it and read it but when I went to answer it, it disapeared and I can't find it anywhere in my inbox. I went to my e-mail and no notification there. Am I seeing things? It was from a member. Is it possible the new system brought it out from some dormant location? It's kinda weird. If the member sees this, please re-send, thanks.

Sorry for all the issues, TDR:eek:

I don't think it was a pm notification - it looks like it was probably a visitor message notification. Click on My Profile up top and then on visitor messages - you got one at 11:00 am today and that was probably your notification of it.
