A friend of mine who has a Duramax has been telling me that their is some interest in Oil Temp's on their website. I did not notice an "Idiot Light" on my '03 & know there is not a guage. How important do you feel having oil temp's available would be? More interested in use for towing than racing.

The Cummins has a good size engine oil cooler and we do not see any oiling issues. On our Rams it would be a waste of money

By the book, if your basically stock on the engine then oil temp should not be an issue.

When adding power throw the book away and start adding gauges. It has always been a rule of thumb that beyond about 450 HP constant duty oil temp was going to be a problem. That is simply a guess from observations from people like Piers and such. What the real critical point is will vary on engine configuration and use, hard to create an absolute.

The oil is cooled by coolant at the front end of the coolant path so for the most part it is quite efficient and reliable.

I have the gage on my 03 Max oil temp I have ever seen in the 7 years is 260* it also has plate and fin oil cooler prior to turbo, it drops the oil temp prior to turbo 80/100*. The sensor for the oil gage is install at the filter port.

Is that cooler literally just inline before the turbo? Leaves the filter head, thru the cooler, and then feeds the turbo? I have been thinking about doing the exact same thing.

The Duramax runs hot, hotter than a normal diesel, and it would make since that there are a lot of conversations about it on their sites. Serious haulers will watch oil temps especially the trany and rear end oils, but in stock configuration the CTD runs cool and is not needed. Isuzu designed the Duramax, and I cant imagine why they would want it to run so hot, I know I will never own one.

I put one on my old 93 that I had bombed every way possible at the time. I found that the oil temp never did anything dramatic and that it wasn't very useful. I ended up putting a switch on it so I could flip between eng and trans temp.
