I was changing my oil last weekend and my oil pain is starting to rust it looks like the in side out. There are bubbles all over it . what the heck how does an oil pan rust. My truck is keep clean!!!! I even wash the under side and I don't drive down dirt roads. what are the trucks like that don"t wash or are in the mud all the time. How hard is it to replace an oil pain do I need to lift the motor ?

Mine did the same thing at about 225,000 miles. Call Geno's for a replacement. You need to loosen the through bolts in the motor mounts and raise the motor 3-4 inches. This gives you just enough room to slip the pan out, without taking down the pick up tube. I glued the gasket to the engine before putting up the new pan. Hold on to your shorts, the pan is spendy.

Look at all the Dodge rear end differential covers as they do the same thing.

I think the type of paint used is some of the problem, as it may not be good for chassis or under carriage areas that are prone to moisture and temperature changes.

Have you ever wondered why they don't paint the block?

Is that all you need to take off is the motor mounts and raise it up? That don't seam to hard. But $475 for a new pan that should last a life time does. thanks for the Info.

I had mine replaced under warranty a year ago. Got 5 hours from home pulling a large load when I developed a large leak. 2 gallons of oil and stopping every hour to refill got me home but I was sweating all the way. What I thought was surface rust on the pan was obviously something much more detrimental. $425 is cheaper than an engine swap.

Just in case anyone gets caught away from home, here is a trick I learned a long time ago. Drain the oil level down below the leak. Take a clean rag and massage in a healthy amount of silicone sealer. Clean the pan with brake clean or carb cleaner and apply the silicone soaked rag as a patch. Let it set up for a hour or two, refil the pan and head for home or help.

Yes mine's bubbling too! been watching it for a while. Been wire brushing and spotting with rustoleum. I don't think it helps. I see this on the fleet I work on, but they're always around road salt. jhenderson, do you need to do anything to the fan/ shroud? I'd think that would need to be undone. The shroud moves well with the engine struts?
IIRC, Cummins dusts the engine in a clearcoat. Perhaps the pan is not on yet when they do it?

04. 5 and up, shroud moves with the engine, no need to disconnect anything other than mounts. 03-04 not sure. The pan is obviously painted, otherwise the rust would have nothing to bubble up behind.

Just checked mine and I've got it to a much lesser degree. I'm five miles from the ocean and the side that faces west is getting it. Looks like I've got a job tomorrow.

I have got the same issue. . Every time i change my oil i just wipe the pan down with some old oil on a rag. Seemes to be working.
Yeah, that might be a good idea. I had three small spots of about 1". I sanded and wirebrushed the spots then applied three coats of Krylon Rust Tough. The pans are clearcoated which easily flakes off with your fingernail.

On JB Weld is Good! J -B KWIK sets in just 4 minutes also.

Last year I looked at the underside of my 2003 dulley. It had a tremendous amount of rust. I was badly injured some years ago and the truck only has 35,000 mi. The drive shafts were very badly pitted as were the transmission pan oil pan etc. I chipped off the scale, sand blasted some areas and cleaned it the best I could. It is a work in progress. I used the POR 15 product and seem to have very good results, although I am not completly finished for the areas that have been coated for a year, it looks pritty good. I only wish that I had sprayd the entire under carrage when the truck was new. I think it would still look new today. www.por15.com. I have no affiliation with them other than the purahase of their product. Good luck and happy motoring.

Live in love, love is the answer!
