Door speakers

Thanks, TDR Staff
I want to replace the door speakers (4") in my mg. The shallowist ones I could find are still just a little to deep and touch the bar in the door with the magnet. The old speakers have a plastic spacer that hold the speakers off just enough that they dont touch (maybe a 1/4" deep)

Anyway, the stereo place where I got the speakers say their solution is to make some spacers out of wood. They dont look very good with their solution, so I'll just make some myself.

Here is my question for anyone that has expertize in this area. Rather than making a spacer out of wood, I wondered about making them out of a 1/4" plastic sheet. I thought that might look better than wood. Has anyone done this before ? My fear is that maybe the plastic will rattle, or otherwise degrade the sound from the door speakers.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks,
Yeh, probably would. I did pick up a pair of those from a different stereo shop. But I think they look cheap, and they would stick out just too much. My thought is something round that just fits the outside of the speakers, or maybe no more than a quarter inch around the outside. I may just go and find some nice looking wood somewhere and make my own. But I think I like the clear plastic idea (as long as the plastic doesnt degrade the sound quality. )

I had a couple spare minutes so I searched a bit. In clear I found some 1/4" plexi-glass sheets. That might be something easy to find and cheap if you trashed a few chunks figuring out how to make what you want... ... .

Mike.

Thats what I had in mind. There are a few "plastics" companies around here where I could get the plexiglass. I wouldnt be surprised if they couldnt just cut the pieces for me as well. Mostly just wondering about how the plastic spacers might affect speaker performance.

As long as the speakers are tightly attached I don't believe that you would have any issues.

Thanks,
I guess I could probably mitigate any problems with a thin piece of felt between the plexiglass and the plastic speaker backing.

Thanks again

Or you could buy some extruded butyl rubber "rope" from Don at sounddeadenershowdown.com

Like genosgarage, he has solid products for more then fair prices, as well as solid customer service.

I have ordered from him twice, but talked on the phone half a dozen times... he is always good with answering questions.
