I am getting ready to service my transmission in my 09 2500 4x4. I will be doing the job myself. Truck has 42000 miles on it. Have not tackled this task before. Been looking at some of the posts on here concerning this. Great info. I was wondering if there is a detailed step by step thread on here pertaining to this task. Any info would be appreciated.

i believe the owners manual says first service is at 28,000... . so, what i do is pull all the trans pan bolts except for a couple on the side and then start loosening them slowly with a pan underneath and it will slowly pour the fluid out for you... . when out clean pan and note particles or chunks... pay attention when you pull the filter as not to leave the seal up inside trans... lube the new seal and shove back in... . you will only get around 4 qts changed in this process... i would reccomend a deep trans pan with a drain plug and would start changing it more frequently until fluid is back to new looking.

If you want to do a true fluid change this is what I did.

Buy your filters and Mag Hytec pan from Geno's and buy 5 gallons of AMZ/OIL all purpose ATF.

Now remove the pan and filters, be sure the O ring comes out. Loosten the valve body bolts, this will get more fluid to drain. I let mine drain overnight.

Next day, install the filters and the O ring. Tighten the valve body bolts. Install the new pan. Measure how much oil was removed. Now add that amount back into the transmission, now you are back to FULL.

At the front drivers side near the radiator are two steel lines with quick connect fittings. The top one is the feed line, disconnect it. Use a 5/16" x 4-5' fuel line hose and slip it into the steel hose connection, make sure the hose fits snug or tape it to seal. Have at least a 10 quart container to drain the ATF into. Have someone start the engine, be sure to keep the hose from coming out (don't ask me why) run until the hose starts to sputter. Measure the amount discharged. Add the same amount back. Repeat the same process until the fluid color changes, you will notice. You should know what the total fluid capacity is so you will know when you are close. When the color changes I drain about an extra quart. Re fill the same amount drained. Re connect the line. Start the engine and do a quick level check. Take your truck for a spin to fully warm the trans up come back home and park in a level spot and adjust the level if needed.

While you are at it drain the power steering pump, the two hoses are at the bottom of the radiator. They have spring steel clamps, slide them back on the hoses and remove and let drain. Measure and re fill the same amount. It also takes ATF, I used AMZ/OIL.

This method works for the 2010-2012 trucks.

Thanks so much! That is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for taking the time to detail it like that!

You are welcome!

It was a leaning experience figuring out what would work and not, like making sure the hose did not come loose!

It is nice not having to adjust bands.

yes there are 2 filters... . same as allison and they dont need changed every time. is cummins12valve 98 suggesting that we run the pump dry? hence the "bubbles"?

I was a little concerned with this myself. I have read other posts where they did it also. He sounds like he knows what he is talking about! I asked Genos about it today when I ordered my filters and the gentleman that filled my order said he probably would not. But he was familiar with the procedure. Did not tell me not to do it though. I ordered a B&M drain plug to install in my pan as well for future services. Wanted the mag-hytec pan but I am installing a gauge to see if I actually need it. Don't want to spend 300. 00 if I don't need to. I like the guys at Genos. Great people!

I would say I do know what I am talking about on this subject. I have done this method on many different transmissions and have several hundred thousand miles that show no ill effects.

It is not like you are running it dry. Really no different than changing your oil when it takes a bit for the oil pressure to climb when you start the engine.

To each his own.

In my opinion it is a joke to do just the pan and leave all the old oil.

Not sure why you would add a gague to the pan? The EVIC gives the trans temp.

Good luck!

I believe and agree with you 100%. I will do it exactly as you described for me when I first started this thread. I appreciate your advice on this! Thanks a million!
