Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting Finally filled a bear tag in Ca

After 15 years of persuing bears without dogs, I finally landed a bear of decent size. Hanging meat was 150lbs so I'm guessing this gent weighed about 225lbs.

Do you eat them? I know people do but when my Dad took me hunting in Co they gave bear tags with Deer tags to get the bear population down. We never did shoot any bears. The reason was that my Dad didnt shoot anything we didnt eat he said that when growing up a kid he knew went hunting and they got a bear. They all came down with some kind of sickness I think it was Trichinosis im not for sure on that but the kid my Dad knew died because of it and it wasn't a pretty way to go out.

Nice bear are you going to do something with the hide???

PS I like the idea of NO DOGS I didnt think you would do that. To me thats not right, fair chase is the way to take ANY GAME.

Congratulations! I know the ol blood gets to pumpin when Ive got a game in my sights but Ive never shot anything that could turn around and attack me if I missed. I bet that had to be very exhilerating!

We eat bear meat here. Nothing a little pork butt and other fat and seasoning can't fix. Bear meat by itself taste like bu t t holes and knee caps.

Cal as of 2013 can no longer peruse bear or bobcats with dogs. I disagree with this new law. In Ca, we have one of the highest bear population nation wide. I've seen many, many , many hounds tore up from bears in my lifetime. Two dogs, on one bear is NO match.

Congratulations!!! I've seen a lot of Bears, always had a tag during deer season, just never shot on one. I hunted exclusively D-5, drew A-13 once, a lot of bear. I've had bear chili and could take it or leave it, not sure what I would do with a whole bear. Sausage/pepperoni?

With the cost of the bear tags, and now no running dogs, there's nothing to control the bears, hunters aren't going to cut it anymore. Get ready for more interaction with nature I guess. Yep, my wife's uncle has lived in South Lake Tahoe for years and he says the bears have become a real problem there. They come through his yard rummaging for food. They have run him indoors more than once

Exhilerating may be an understatement... Here's a little 300lb'r my son shot last year, a moment after this picture was taken, the bear got up and ran off into the water, had to shoot it again... Kid's going to give me a heart attack yet.

I do not disagree with your statement. I would never purposely look/hunt for a bear(unless it was becoming a terrible nuisance or worse), as I have never tasted anything bear that I was fond of, but sometimes our adult children do not heed our advice...

Nice Bear! I shot one a couple years ago that dropped, made noise - then stopped making noise and ran off into a deeply wooded ravine. I could not find him. Glad your son was able to get another shot off. Black bears are known for being able to run for a mile or two after being shot through the lungs.

My dad and I came face to face with a beautiful cinnamon about two years ago, both had tags, just watched it run off. Would have made a beautiful rug. Either way I have a memory that lasts a lifetime. Bottom line, CA is in big trouble with bears, about to be much worse. Although all the folks I know that hunt with dogs are all from about the same counties up north. Either Siskiyou, Shasta, and Trinity. Who else runs dogs in CA? Do folks in south CA have any problems with bears?

I got my first bear this year. It's nearly identical in size and color to yours, but came from the edge of the Frank Church Wilderness.

Exactly what happened, my son shot him from the side, too far up behind his shoulder and passed over the top of the heart and through it's lungs.

I was not present, but my son was very fortunate he was not mauled or killed. I believe he will be more cautious in the future.

As I am sure the OP can attest, even these smaller bears are very fast and agile and dangerous, and if cornered, well you had better be prepared.
