Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting .38 ACP and 9MM Largo

Happy thanksgivings day!!!!

I just ordered new sights for my 45/70 SBL. I have not been real happy with the XS Ghost Ring setup that was presented with the rifle when new.

Brownells now has the new style front base, with both brass bead and fiber optic front sights. I was also able to order a new XS threaded aperture rear peep sight(from XS), that will accept different size diameter XS peeps.

If you click on the red numbers in the following link, it will popup the part # and info. #59 base, #65 is the brass bead aperture, #579-603-125 = orange fiber optic, #579-603-126 = green fiber optic. The black numbered items, are old style and no longer available. I am hopeful this will make for a more precise sight picture at distance.

I tried a BSA Red Dot, both elevation and windage adjustments would not retain setpoints. To clarify, as long as I was adjusting in one direction, I could walk my round right in on target, but if I over corrected, then adjusted in the opposite direction one click back, the next round would throw it way off, very frustrating.

Here's the link for the new sights available for our 1895's,

how far are you generally shooting from.

i like my wilson. it adjusts easily with the knobs, holds its setting even with high pressure 460's, and is compact enough to not get in the way of a scope if ever you should desire one.

I normally start sighting in at 25 yards, then move out to 100 yards. 100 yards is where I was having difficulty with the original XS rear peep sight, in combination with the front "white line" blade sight, the rear peep's hole was too large, making it hard to hold center on the sight picture. I realize it was designed for quick acquisition, and under 50 yards works very nice, it was beyond that distance that my accuracy went all to heck.

I'm hopeful this modification will improve my accuracy when reaching out a bit farther, I'll let you know when I get it set up.

What are you going to use the rifle for or hunt with it. I dont know about you but im kind of game/rifle oriented Elk I have one gun ,deer I have another, Antelope I have another, Protection I have 2 kind of thing, I really like my Marlin for what it is intended for Protection or MAYBE deep woods hunting. I personally wouldn't use it for long shots. BTJMO

BIG

Mainly for protection from large critters, although it would be my "go to" firearm for elk or moose. 100 yards max for the most part, anything further I need a scope, which is where my . 270 comes in...

By the way "good morning"!

And a Great AM it is GOING HOME TODAY!!!!!!

I was just wondering about the use of the Marlin. I think your into KITTY hunting after shooting a black bear with mine  It would do way to much damage to a kitty to save the pelt. But ya for hunting in thickets and woods under a 100 that Marlin is the ticket. I will have to look at mine and see what company made the sights they Glow in the dark blade front and split in the rear REALLY EASY TO SEE.

Congrats on going home!

The earlier guide guns have dovetail mount front sights, is what I was told, and more to choose from. Mine is screw(2) mounted, and not much available, so I was happy to find these. Dawson Precision sent me in this direction.

The reason that I dont know the brand on mine is because the gunsmith that rebuilt 2 or our rifles this year and I were talking about my Marlin and I mentioned I didnt like the factory sights they just didnt let me get a quick sight on second or third or empty the damn thing, after the first shot I LOST SIGHT OF EVERTHING. He got some and put them on as a bonus for working with him. I like them ALLOT. I also carry in a scabbard on saddle so that was a consideration also.

Going home thanks now I can rest

Put my new sights on, haven't shot it yet, but am hopeful I'll like them. Brownells did not have a "windowed" hood for the front sight, but my local gunsmith had this stainless unit for six bucks. I couldn't get the peep to line up on the rear, so did without.
