I have a 2006 3500. I recently replaced the factory vacuum pump and pulley with less than 78,000 miles.

Now with less than 1500 miles the replacement is going bad. Is there something else I should be looking at that may

Have caused damage to the pump. Or did I receive a defective pump.

There is no factory vaccuum pump on an 06, all the controls are electric motors.

You must be replacing the EB pump and they are problematic. If the EB is dead again then you got a bad one but you need to make sure you don't have other issues with the EB first.

I have talked with Jacobs at length about this issue and they say that the most common cause of a vacuum pump failure is a leak. The pumps simply will not survive it.

Pull a vacuum on the line that comes off of the pump with a mighty vac and check for leaks, also activate the solenoid while under vacuum. You really need to do this before dealing with the pump issue.

JMHO.

If the leak is that bad would not the EB fail too work at all or at least exhibit less than rational behaviour? I can see a leak is bad but it HAS to effect operation at some point that should be obvious one would think.

Not necessarily. The leak can be small enough to put stress on the pump and still allow the pump to maintain vacuum when the EB is operational.
