Have at least one manifold gasket that has been allowing blow-by under the hood. The other day, the noise changed. Have read some complaints and horror stories about the stock manifold progressively shrinking and eventually even cracking heads.

Thinking of a three-piece exhaust. Are they worth it? It seems like they'd relieve expansion/contraction stress, but, do they leak?

I recently put an ATS 3 piece on my 96. It dropped egts and helped to bring in the boost sooner.

It is a proven design in the OTR trucks. Bigger Cummins, Cats and and detroits come factory with multi piece exhaust manifolds

When took of my old factory manifold it had leaks on nearly all the gaskets. I put a BD 3 piece on, with a 3931516 stock intake from Cummins (non EGR) naughty.

I used a stud kit makes it alot easier.

What a huge difference.

It pulls really hard now and i havn't even put my #5 plate in yet.

No leaks so far well worth it.

OK, got another question... There's another noise from underneath that started approx the same time as what I thought was the change in exhaust racket. This is associated with vehicle movement. When stationary, nothing. When moving down the road, sounds like a guy underneath with a jackhammer  Could I be so lucky as for that to be a characteristic sound of a U-joint or a carrier bearing, or a brake assembly part, or do you guys suspect a more expensive component?

PLEEEEZE let it be something in the less-than-$400 range

got that fixed later that same month. life has been happening, so the exhaust manifold is still the same, but, will probably order that 3-piece after New Years

Meh, a buddy broke his ring and pinion in his w250 at a sled pull, had to get trailered home. No bueno. So far the only thing I've really broken on a truck was on my 08 2500, and nothing broke - I just melted the underdrive clutches. That was expensive enough.

Well, just when I was thinking seriously about my new manifold, my son calls and tells me he thinks the CRD Liberty's turbo has taken a crap. Good thing "Tiny" isn't my "daily driver".

I've been keeping an eye on my exhaust manifold. Original with 250k. I can't hear or feel any leaks while under the hood but when running down the road with a load, i think i might hear a leak. The area of the manifold by cylinder 1 is pulling toward the center of the engine. It's not quite touching the bolt yet but getting close. I'm thinking of taking the manifold off, drilling the holes larger for where the bolt goes through and installing new gaskets as a temporary patch until I get a new 3 piece manifold. I'm thinking this would allow more space for streching to keep the manifold from cracking or head ears from breaking off. has anyone tried this method?

I have seen it done, but no I have never done it. If you are going to go that far port it while you have it off-it does help

Bob how would I go about "porting" it? Is this something I would have done by a shop or could I do myself with a hammer and chisel? ;)
