04' International

Wayne. M and Mike Wilson

Thanks for the help and info for the trans swap in my international truck. I knew that there was a man down the way that has logging trucks and finally talked to him in town. He also has an International truck as a service truck that is an automatic. He didnt think that the 500 series Allison's would be enough for my International he asked about the HP and what had been done to it. He suggested the 600 series as it would be much stronger?

He came to the house to take a look at my truck and said that he has a 600 series trans that would fit with some floorboard mod done (BIL is going to do the swap said NO BIG DEAL) the trans has a KEY PAD for a shifter and he said it would only need to have an RPM LEAD to make the trans work unless I wanted to make a MANUAL SHIFT AUTO. Meaning that I would have to push a button on the key pad to make it shift. With the RPM lead from the motor it could be used manual shift or full auto shift. He has all the parts to do the job he had it as a spare for his International but has bought more logging trucks and needs more of a service truck also. He came down with the parts today and just gave them to the wife (I was not home) and told her to catch him later on the price or dont worry about it either way he needed the room in his shop.

I have never driven an auto big truck. Do they down shift on their own? or can I make it to where I HAVE CONTROL OF THE DOWN SHIFT. The reason Im asking is downshifting at the wrong time IN THE SNOW could have disastrous results ( like I said ive never driven one)

Thanks again for the help and all the info.

I put a lot of miles on a F750 with 300hp CAT and 6spd Allison with the keypad shift. It shifted with better logic than any OEM light duty trans I have ever driven. Do a search online for the Allison operator's manual. It will tell you a lot about how the control works. Also, you have the option of having the dealer change some of the configuration settings allowing you to "tune" the trans to suit your vehicle and driving style.

Every one of medium dutys trucks at our company are now autos. You will get used to the feel very quickly and not even think about it after a while. I'm not sure how everyone else drives them, but I usually only manually control the trans to downshift for decending a hill. All other times, I usually just let the truck do it's thing. I'm not sure how your particular truck is equipped, but our new DT466 powered Internationals have the same engine brake/auto trans integration as the modern Dodge Cummins offerings.

Mine is just a STRAIGHT DIESEL no exhaust BS on it thats the reason I want to keep it + I know that the engine runs great it had an out of frame done 100k ago im the only one that has driven it sense that time. I DONT plan on running around bobtail but you never know when you must I just dont like the idea of IT DOING THE DOWNSIFTING at that time.

I know the 600 series, but only as a hydraulic trans. With a quadrant shifter. It has a huge square cast iron heavy pan... Anyway, yea, I think it will be fine. I keypad means it uses ATEC Allison electronics. I've always known them to be BULLETPROOF. You can do diagnostics and oil level through the keypad.
The shift pattern kinda goes like this;
First is high reduction, converter unlocked
Second is the next higher gear, Converter unlocked
Third is not really third- THE CONVERTER LOCKS.
Then from there on, all ranges are with the converter locked. You'll get the hang of it... Definitely hook up the RPM pickup and let it work. The only thing I would scrutinize is a cooler. Get a gauge hooked up to watch... .

You can always punch it into "N"... .

In those trannys we always ran 15/40. Yup. When we got the current world trannys that didn't work out too well. So we would up using TRANSYND $$$

Thanks for info it will be a learning experience for sure I know that the left leg will get TWITCHY when the RPM starts to rise. Wayne im for sure going to hook it up as an AUTOMATIC put it in gear and drive.

Another question there was a company in So Ca. that ran automatics U. S. Express. I hated to get behind them when they were lite (empty or bobtail) they would take off from a light and it took them for ever to get across the intersection because the thing would start in 1st gear. Can the trans be shifted into a higher gear to start when empty or not. Chevron had an automatic truck this one had a clutch used only to start and stop but when empty it could be locked in 4th gear when it was down shifting so it would stay in that gear when you started out then would be normal after that. I drove it like 2 times and had a good :-laf it didn't last to long in city traffic and they dropped the idea of converting to them.

Cant shift anymore left leg that made it so I COULD shift is gone. Getting to be were if they keep whittling on me im going to be so short I cant get on any of the amusement park rides. If this is what your talking about the Codger thats in the story im proud to say he's my Pard has a Deuce and a half with crane that he uses everyday cutting firewood this one is an automatic that he has, but has others that are stick. He came down last summer to get on my welder to do some serious welding he called it and needed to use more than his buzzzz box welder. Its a pretty good little look at just one of the old guy's that make up our town he's quite the GUY. He wanted to pay for the use of the welder? Come on just a little fuel and a stick or two of rod GO ON WITH THAT I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER is what I said, next day we found a cord of wood at the drive with a note * Didnt want to wake you up by coming down the driveway * his trucks are SO LOUD that when he gets on the road and putting the foot to it you can hear him coming for MILES. :-laf And always has a pot of coffee on pretty neat idea for heating up the pot I thought. Those trucks didnt move so fast Im looking for something to move my stock trailer around and pickup things on the gooseneck that I cant use the Dodge for and it pays to go faster than 55 up here the distances are so far that it would take for ever. IM NOT BUYING into the new truck with all the problems that the exhaust filters have and just not what I want. I think that whent my BIL gets his hobby done putting in my auto trans and gets the bugs worked out the old International will be just fine. But I will tell Papa smurf about the trucks have a web site on them? Just reread your post those ARE AUTOMATICS wouldnt mind having one but getting a new toy by the wife is going to be a tough one :-laf
