I was working on one of our older R models, it has the next up model- HT700... Truck's like 18 years old- never been out. . I think youll be satisfied, nothing like rowing your own, but a LOT easier.

Big,

I have not abandoned you, have just been extremely busy.

As luck would have it I have been running one of our delivery trucks to Houlton and back which has an Allison in it. I swore at it for the first 500 miles or so, then have gotten kind of used to it. It will downshift and hold back all by itself, but it seems like forever before it does so.

I try to run after dark so none of my driver buddys see me in a truck with an automatic and juice brakes... ... . there will be no peace for me at the coffee shop if I get outed..... :D

I don't know the model of it, will look it up later today. I do know it is only a 4 speed with O/D.

We have a 6 speed Allison in our tandem delivery truck mated to an ISC Cummins. My father drives that one quite a bit over some nasty terrain (today the truck is on it's way to Fort Kent up Route 11 if you remember that from your Loring days) and I will ask him how it performs in hills and how much holdback it has. It does have an engine brake so it may operate just like my '06 does where the engine brake and transmission work as a team.

Mike. :)

Mike thanks for your input when I read your post Houlton , Fort Kent did remind me of Maine and as I look outside THE WHITE STUFF COVERING UP 60% OF THE WINDOWS REALLY BRINGS IT HOME :-laf

Ya my only concern is the downshifting in winter conditions that could be REAL UGLY pulling a trailer, but then again I DONT know cause I havent pulled a trailer in the snow with an AUTOMATIC with equipment of this size. I have done it with the Dodge but cant beleive that the shifts will be the same with the Allison being as smooth as the Dodge maybe so.

I have to bump tail gates with Dad in the morning at the Houlton store.

I will ask him how it behaves in the snow, long downgrades, etc. and let you know. That tandem truck is loaded pretty heavy so should be a fair comparison for you.

Mike.

Allison downshifts are harsh. There's no concern for comfort. I think that's one key for their longevity. No slippage. No extra heat. If you've ever had a nice car automatic done up with a shift kit, that's pretty much what its like.

Wayne THAT was my concern if they are that harsh with the goose-neck trailer coming around so I can inspect the taillights from the cab seat would be a ride best not taken. I will have to see how it acts when done if I can put it in MANUEL and downshift when I WANT it to it would be fine. If not I guess I could kick into N and see how that goes. It must be fine there are allot of drivers of such equipment around here even the State has one that they pull a dove tail equipment trailer and a tractor with and he FLYS by our place most everyday. During the summer I DONT CARE but snow still gives me a pucker

BIL and Nephew have finished my Christmas Present from them, the Trans install is complete. Took it for a drive not bad really!!! Wayne you are rite YOU KNOW WHEN IT SHIFTS. It is a very positive shift but not a SLAM BANG type. Down shift wasn't what I thought it drops the gear at lower RPM than when up shifting (cant really tell for sure its snowing) but took the stock trailer and gave it a try. I think I will like the manual auto shift where I tell it when to shift if not it wont, that I think will be nice in the mountains pulling the gang in the trailer I can see whats in front of me and know if I want to shift or not so I dont loose RPM and pull to low a RPM on the motor. Or constant up and down shifting to save the trans. BIL asked what about the clutch pedal? just leave it in and make it stationary so I can rest my LEFT foot on it and RIDE THE CLUTCH :-laf

Drove it by the guy's house that supplied the parts and asked how much? he said you pay what you think, He asked last year about taking him and his 2 sons and wife up to the mountains during hunting season they would use their own equipment just drop us off and pick us up a week or two later. THAT'S IT!!!!! consider it done I will even guide for ya and or scout the best spot to hunt or just leave and come back every other day for a game check. I dont want to be a burden on a family hunt. THIS BARTER SYSTEM THING IS OK TO ME!!!

BIG. Glad to hear the outcome, and that is was good. Kudos to your BIL. May it crank out many shifts!!

MERRY CHISTMAS to you, Penny, and the whole gang up there!!!
