J35 Recall Info

Just had the dealership do the J35 recall update. My recall notice said it included a software update for the EVIC too and that the dealer would print instructions for the changes to the EVIC. I did not get a print out and cannot see any changes to the display. The dealer service guy said the recall was ECM update only. Does anyone remember if there is/was a EVIC flash with the recall?

Don't know what the name of the updates were, but my truck was updated about a month ago. Tech had it connected to Dodges computer and it showed that two updates were available and you could separate the two and update one or both. But I know it wasn't for the EVIC, that I would of remembered.

From the recall notice, only ECM flash.

The Engine Control Module (ECM) software program on about 159,700 of the
above vehicles may cause illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
when no problem exists or under certain conditions allow heavy sooting of the
turbocharger, exhaust gas recirculation valve and diesel particulate filter. Heavy
sooting could damage emissions components and result in increased emissions.
The Engine Control Module must be reprogrammed (flashed).

The ccn is supposed to be updated along with the ECM when doing the j35. It is 2 different steps and is paid for by warranty I will try to remember to look up the paper work later

Ok here it is tSB 18 016 10 it supersedes 1801308. It says basically you Must flash the ccn if it is not at the AG level. That software went on production units in 09
I still come across some trucks that have not had it done yet

I had the J35 recall accomplished in April,2010. Flash was updated at that time from BD to BH. Do I need additional updates if J35 was completed in 2010?

Tough to tell. That tSB came out in 2010,and hard to say if your dealer did or did not know the ccn update was recommended. The only way to be sure is to check to see if you are at or above the AG level

Ask your dealership service writer. He can enter your VIN in his computer and should be able to determine the answer. A dealer tech who does a reflash is supposed to attach an adhesive label under the hood. I don't know if they always do.

If you have a warranty left or you want to pay the labor cost, have them hook it up to their computer, and it will tell them what flashes need to be performed. Thats what I did in Nov of last year and there were two updates, which I had performed at that time. Lucky for me, the service writer thought it was under warranty but the computer said otherwise, and because I know the tech after purchasing many trucks from them, he ignored the computer.

Anyone have this J35 update done to a Sterling Bullet? A friend has one for his service truck with a pto driven hydraulic crane & hydraulic air compressor and he's had the 3rd turbo put on in less than 90K miles. The Sterling dealer doesn't know anything about J35... .

Recalls are vin specific. If his sterling had a recall a notification would have been sent out

Hey thanks so very much. Yeah they do not have any recalls available so I guess he'll just have to put up with the clogging vanes, failed turbo, and occasional limp mode until the warranty expires. Sterling says they can't do anything for him since Chrysler is now owned by Fiat. He will just have to look into a delete kit to make it run without clogging up.

Which emission setup does the Sterling run, is it the C&C version or regular pickup version? not many failures with the C&C version.

IIRC there were no sterling pick ups only C/Cs. I think i read some where that MB dealers were picking up the repairs on Sterlings

It sound like you are talking about my Sterling. The turbo, DPF and egr all were replaced under warranty. Detroit Diesel assumes all warranty on our 6. 7s in the Sterling C/C. The Freightliner dealer I used to take my Bullet to had way less info available to them as compared to the Dodge (Ram) dealer I use for my 4500 Ram. I am using H&S tuner on my Sterling and have been problem free of emission nightmares, limp mode, sticky turbo etc... for a year now.
