Bob, I realized that. . they may pay for a portion of it. . It was just convenience to be close to home. Well the truck is in the dealer now and starting to go through it. . we will see. . hope it is a simple repair. Might have to have a fuel filter in the truck on hand for just this reason if it is discovered to be that cause.

Understood,it is always better to use a shop you have a good rapport with

I always have AAA Plus coverage and it's not that expensive. With that i can get towed 100 miles on any vehicle I'm in, even if I don't own it.

george

Me too,but I have the 200 mile coverage with rv as well. That's usually enough to get me home from most my playgrounds and allows me to fix it at my leisure

Service adviser called, Turns out it was the DPF. . Loaded up. . Don't know why there was no warning of % full. . and there was a problem with the EGR. . None of those warnings went off. . Also when all this happened, the CCV Filter loaded up and also it messed up the Air filter... So DPF covered, the EGR covered, the CCV and air filter I pay. . $225 total I owe... Fuel is good and clean... so that's it, should be wed. when I get it back. .

I've got AAA plus and rv coverage. I didn't realize a 200 mile upgrade was available. Gonna do Death Valley in a couple of months.

Eric, glad they got you going again.

Glad most of the repair is still under warranty. How many miles do you currently have? Did the dealership have an explanation for the lack of DPF % alert?

How could the ccv and air filters be effected by a plugged dpf?

What is your normal driving duty cycle for this truck? Does it see a lot of slow speed short trips running errands or to and from work?

35900 miles. . tech was going to check the computer to make sure all is working good on that place.
It does not sound right. Black smoke out the t/pipe is cracked/broken dpf. No warning? I have never seen that happen... ... ... . at least yet. Replacing a dpf is #1 very rarely needed and #2 is always caused by something gone wrong. Even if it was from getting too hot by excessive load or fueling

I'm relieved to hear that it's your experience that DPF replacement is rare, and that no warning is unheard of. It will be interesting to hear the final word from the shop because I'm not convinced they've truly solved the mystery yet.

I too was glad Bob spoke up on that. I don't understand how a DPF would be full and fail without ever setting CELs and codes. There may be more to this story when Eric drives it again.

What I was told, the CCV and the air filter gets plugged up because of the DPF plugged. . Backed up I guess. . How or why the computer didn't warn is a mystery. . They did about 89 mile test and they say everything is working right. . They did replace a sensor listed in the same work up as the DPF section so maybe a sensor got bad and didn't go off.
Also they replaced the EGR Valve as I guess it was gunked up and it was easier to replace under warranty than clean it. . maybe it was malfunctioning too. . don't know.

I tend to make several short trips but I thought I was getting it warmed up enough. . only rarely do I shut it off before the engine warms up all the way. Winter temps make it hard to warm up also... So $235 later all is well. .

The part I don't quite understand is if the DPF went tango uniform causing the EGR to gunk up... ... ..... then the DPF caused all the problems. Why did the OP have to pay for anything?

The dpf was not the cause of a problem. A dpf will not cause an egr to fail. If the egr did not fail it should not have been replaced.
If I had the last 8 of the vin I could know a lot more.

Bob, I don't care if the EGR was not the problem, they replaced it under warranty. OK, whatever. . Im not going to argue with him. . The truck is over 3 yrs. old so the 3/36 is up. . the CCV was not covered but it said there was too much vacuum on the test for it so it was replaced. . also fumes/vapor went to the air filter and gunked that up. . Now the CCV was $143 + the air filter and taxes. . all in all I think it is good. . Most of the emissions is brand new now... They did run the computer diagnostic and did an extensive test drive to make sure all systems were running good.

Eric,

I think your experience shows just driving far enough to allow the engine to reach operating temperature is not sufficient to avoid soot issues. I guess it also suggests the '09 model trucks are not exempt from the problems the '07. 5 and '08s experienced early on if not driven longer distances and worked a little harder. Thanks to the tree huggers in the EPA our engines are just not suitable for grocery getting short trips.

You should be in good shape now if you change your duty cycle and work it hard enough to avoid a repeat.

That used to be an advantage to owning a diesel..... Multi-purpose! Now you purchase a newer truck with all the fancy gadgets and plush interior and super-quiet cab so that you can enjoy it. Nope, not unless your hooked to a 20k lb trailer or carry a cord of firewood in the box everyday. Thx Obama!... ... ... . The flip side is that our older trucks are getting top-dollar paid in the used market!
