There is a pressure relief /roll over valve in the fuel gauge sending unit.

After having the 3rd gen for so long and always filling to the neck, I tried that on the most recent first gen I had, and fuel started spilling out of the top of the tank. It never made it to the neck.

Also to get more fuel into tank pull the filler neck out and cut about 4 inches off of it help's with filling and you will get more in to it .

They used the long fill vent trick in the wranglers to make a 20 gallon tank a 15. Cut the fill vent you now have a 20 gallon tank

I cut 2 1/2 inches off my vent tube in the tank. Still about an inch on it. It does fill to the top faster now. I cut 4 inches off the one in my '97.
