For as long as I've owned my truck, I've had Polaris Labs do analyses on the various fluids on a set schedule. The vacuum pump I bought from them at the start works well for everything but getting oil from the engine [the smallest diameter of tubing (1/4 inch, I believe) will not go down the dipstick tube]. For engine oil, I've had to remove the filter and get a sample there. On their website, I see where Polaris offers various sampling valves that appear could be made to work on the 5. 9 engine:

I'd like to know if anybody's installed one of these valves on their engine. If you have, which one did you use and where did you tap into the oiling system at? Any info will be appreciated.

Truck Vehicle Development used a valve that was on the top side of the oil filter housing. It was easy and quick to draw a sample. No mess, just enough oil for the sample.

I've used an 1/8" diameter air hose... (industrial tubing used on air controls)... I'm guessing that it would go down the dip stick tube with no problem... I believe that if you laid a section out and hit it with a heat gun you'd be able to take the coil out of the tube and it would work fine...

Just a thought about how I'd do it... .

I've had a Fumoto oil drain valve on mine for the last 4 to 5 years without any problems. It replaces the stock oil drain plug. They are around 26 bucks from genos garage.

Since I take my truck off-road quite a bit, I don't want to add a valve in place of the drain plug on the oil pan. I'm probably going to use one of the valves in the link I attached, and will install it on top of the oil filter head. If anybody else has done likewise, plz let me know any particulars about your installation.

You are paranoid. No one on this site no has anyone ever ripped of a Fumoto drain valve. I beat the crap out of my truck running road-less ranches here in the foothills of California. I've ran through gobbs of barbed wire, busted corral board fences, dropped off 2'/3' embankments into creek washes and NOT once have I even come close to touching the cheapo Fumoto valve.

JHawes,

Thanks for that info. I'll take a closer look at possibly using a Fumoto on my truck. I installed one on my wife's Jeep Liberty diesel, and it's really useful in that application. Would still like to hear from anybody who installed a drain valve on their filter head.
