Prairie Rats need to be saved????

http://news.yahoo.com/prairie-dog-saved-090211995--abc-news-tech.html

Don't know why they want to save these??? HH said that wild Hogs are eating Texas well these will eat land up and destroy it beyond repair animals falling into holes and breaking legs. Had a group of folks last spring that were all for saving them in town. I wouldn't sign a petition and they got upset bunch of green peace Winne's anyway. They DO!!! serve a purpose when they are out and I DO ENJOY the purpose, a few beers and lunch, great fun for all except the Prairie dogs :-laf

Then leave them lay and wait for the next event to start.

I dont worry about ATA he's like a bad case of hemroids just a big irritant only Prep H wont get rid of him. He has no life and worries about things that he has no idea of :D

There is an enormous difference between drunkeness and the relaxing effect of two beers on the back porch. Many people don't have enough stress in their lives to understand the benefit. Or the lesser of side effects beer gives over Prozac... ... Not to mention, beer is wayyyy cheaper.

Prairie rats and then Prairie poodles!! Yep. Sounds like one heck of a vacation weekend.

Any idiot(I can't think of any more appropriate term) that promotes the well being of the prairie rat has never owned land and tried to make the payments by farming or ranching it, let alone had a colt they helped the mare deliver, raised up, hand fed, broke themselves, fell in love with, and then had to shoot in the head after falling in a collapsed hole and breaking a leg. All they know if they get their bread from a store and there's always plenty. They have no idea of how it gets there..... or what will happen when there's not any there. I don't think they should be exterminated, as all things have a place in God's creation, but the imbalance man has created should be balanced by man, and I don't think it's healthy to dump out a few hundred rattlesnakes or breed coyotes in captivity to balance the rat population. Especially when there's other alternatives..... . 17, . 204, . 224, . 243, . 257, . 264, . 277, . 284, . 308, . 311, . 323, . 338..... you get the idea... :D

It's like the Elk population in Colorado... . they are all dying of CWD, but the people of the big cities don't care. They'd rather they suffer for years, dying a slow death of basic starvation, then let the state (or themselves!!!!) benefit from the millions of dollars of sales the tags would bring, let alone the millions of ancilliary income from hotels, grocery stores, etc. that would come from out of state hunters..... They ACTUALLY PROPOSED hiring sharp shooters to deal with the problem, costing millions of dollars to the state..... The Parks and Wildlife director said he could fix the problem overnight, and make money with it. He's already got a system in place, and only has to issue tags and set up seasons, all at a minimal cost to the state... . Not much has been done, except the slow, painful death of a few hundred elk.

We have that problem down here along the front range. A variety of groups have tried and some have succeeded in court saving the little buggers towns. Especially in the Boulder area go figure that one. Cant let p-dogs go down for the sake of development. IIRC one group won a case in the area over a housing development but another one lost for a medical center. I guess in Boulder it depends on what the development is for before you can decide whether p-dogs are worth keeping or whose pockets are going to benefit.

My grandparents have a cabin in Utah that is on a working cattle ranch in Utah. I have been going there and enjoying the place for 50 years. It has always been common practice on the ranch to kill the "pot guts" as they are called there. When I was young it was fun to shoot them. For a young kid who likes to shoot what more could you ask for live game, pest control, doing the world a favor and I get to shoot for a reason. As I got older I questioned the practice to myself and quit doing it when I was there. However several years later I was up there by myself and was cleaning out the spring and just happen to see a horse fall in one of their holes and break its leg. There is no phone or cell service or any utilities for that matter up there. I went down into town to call the owner of the ranch (they live in the next town farther away) to let him know about the horse. He asked me some questions about the horse. He was mad as heck, it was one of his best cattle horses and said he wouldnt be able to get up there for a few days and since I was up there could I shoot it for him as it just wouldnt be right to let it wait for 3 days and he would deal with the animal when he got up there. I said uh well uh I guess. So when I got back up there an hour or so later I got out my pistol and went to task. One of the harder / more emotional things I had ever done in my life to that point to be honest. Ever since then I shoot the little bastages up there when I see them. I was still fairly young when this happened and couldnt help but feel somewhat guilty about having to shoot a horse that I might have prevented had I been shooting the pot guts the previous couple years when I was up there. I know it was not really my fault or even my responsibility but nonetheless. I dont go out and "hunt" them as a matter of course I do however shoot them on the ranch when they present themselves as a target of opportunity.

HH the last part is how my Dad presented Hunting to my Brother and myself. He was always an avid hunter growing up on a farm in Nebraska he knew that animals provide for humans as harvest, but was always careful NOT to think that man was the ALL KNOWING. He took my Brother and myself to WY one winter when my Brother was 12 and I 10 we walked out into a large field with hundreds and hundreds of ELK. Some were doing OK some looked like for sure that this was their last winter. He told us that it would be a waste to not use the harvest to our advantage and to help save the species at the same time. My Brother wanted NOTHING to do with hunting, ME on the other hand couldn't wait I had 2 years to wait but Dad came and said your going hunting this year using your Brothers birth certificate Oo.

In our town I wish it was different but they rely on Tourists spending money around town, Hunters come in and finish off the year for towns people to last them the rest of the year and first of next until the fishing guys come in. I dont really have a problem with the people spending money in our town. IT'S JUST THAT THEY ARE SO STUPID ABOUT I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER!!!!:-laf,,,,,,,,,,,,, LIKE ATA

Had to finish off a dog year before last that coyotes got hold of THAT WAS TUFF!!!

I have NO choice in the POT GUTS the wife had me turn over 2 acres of land last fall for her garden this coming spring. She asked just the other day if I had all the AMMO I needed to rid the place of the POT GUTS. She knows about the anti gun news around the country and just wanted to have me lay in enough to do the job, Thanks for the new name(POT GUTS) it keeps all the environmentalist wondering WHAT IN THE HECK ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT

Yep I'm a CITY SLICKER I guess. But apparently there are a lot of people that don't know it's illegal to drink and shoot even on your own property. Big ticket and confiscation of your guns. BIG has a BIG problem of thinking he can do anything and everything. But if you go back and read his post, there is so much B. S. BIG I hope you don't shoot your other foot off drinking and shooting?

See this is where the B. S. comes in. You tell it like you were in COMBAT but in Political Forum you told everybody you were in the AIR FORCE. You also said you never seen a bigger than 10 round mag. in Southeast Asia. only in the MESS HALL maybe. BIG you just can't control yourself with all your B. S. and OBNOXIOUS comments. I know you are to OLD to GROW-UP now but good luck with the rest of your B. S. life?

AHHH! POT GUTS:-laf! The Boulderites worship them as returning ancestors:-laf!

I really love the antics when a P-dog rescue babe soaps a den and catches one of them fat, furry, flea infested, PLAGUE CARRYING, rats in a towel and sucks face with it while drying it off(Wheres a BARF Smilie when ya needs one?)!!

When we used to be able to shoot them around here. (They are protected in Boulder County)! We measured effectiveness in Gore factor and how high they would be be launched into the sky!

I killed two with one shot, by Barr lake, many decades ago with a 6MMX284. That 80 grain bullet was going so fast that it vaporized the ground zero animal and killed the one next to it with shrapnel from the vaporizing bullet jacket.

The shot was only 2 hundred yards, and when I got to the kill, the ground zero animal remains were only the two hind legs and tail with skin attached. It was still smoking!Oo.

Being in control of YOU is an act of responsibility, ATA! You may not like this idea of recreation. Thats OK with me! Course you may prefer Cyanide and a bulldozer for all I know!

If you had a livelyhood personally dependent on your natural environment, such as ranching and farming including the well being of your livestock and produce, you may think differently.

You dont get that interaction in a grocery store.

I would have no issue shooting with anyone who is a mature and responsible adult, Beer or no Beer. Personally, I dont drink beer when I am shooting. Coffee is my "Group Tightener"!

Knowing my personal limitation is my responsibility!

I dont know if you are familiar with the American Scheutzen Competitions from around the late 1800s until WW-1? Beer flowed freely during these rifle matches!

And Yes! I have seen folks go to far with alcohol. I have stopped hunting with certain individuals because of this abuse.

ATA, my point is that you are out of line suggesting the worse case scenerio is always the norm! That is a LEFTY Trait:-laf!

Ah dont bother with him GMan.

I dont know if they call them the same thing any longer they dont list them that I can see on the Hornady Site but search it and they come up. Talk about SX Super Xplosive I use the larger for a 22-250 and the smaller for the 223. When I first started to use these way back when I used the 22-250 and shot at 200 yard targets looked thru the spotting scope and  nothing shot again same result  had several targets at various ranges and kept moving in and same result. Range master call a halt and went to look at target looked like little bits of shot in the target. Another shooter asked what are you shooting I told him he said they are coming apart in mid air. Pulled out the 223 and BINGO!!! Had to slow them down in the 22-250. The bullet I used in the 223 for coyote hunting in Ca was great 1 hole and rarely did it exit the yote but sure put them down in a hurry :-laf

http://www.hornady.com/store/22-Cal-.224-55-gr-SP-SX/

the smaller one is a 50 gr absolutely devastating on yotes and the Pot Guts (I like that name :-laf

Thats the beautiful part of living in the country, everybody has a different line of thinking including law enforcement. Nothing wrong at all with sitting on the back deck and knockin a few targets off while conversing with friends and family, and occassionally washing it down with a cold one. Ive even shot with a local officer at his house, the first thing he offered me on our way through his garage to the shooting range out back was a budweiser. Does that make it more legal? Absolutely not but the point is if you have things like morales and discipline and common sense a beer or 2 isnt going to get anybody shot and it sure the hell isnt going to get anyone thrown in jail, at least around here! I realize things are different in the big city too many idiots running around like stray dogs and its got law enforcement wound tight. Theres more people in the city breaking gun laws than there ever will be in the rural areas, and thats the reason the leftists want to take everybodys guns away.

My dad and I are planning a road trip out west pulling a toy hauler with my truck this summer to bust some prairie dogs. I think both of us are going to take our Ruger M77 . 204's. I have an M77 . 22-250 and 700 BDL . 223 and prefer my . 204 to both of them for general varmint hunting. Here in the east I use it effectively on fox, coyotes, groundhogs. Excited about shooting prairie dogs, looks like fun. I am not familiar with shooting the SX Hornady ammo. Hornady is the only ammo I shoot out of my varmint rifles, SP and the v-max.

First off, I meant no verbal attack on any ONE person, it was meant to be a general statement. Secondly, please act the gentlemenly part you can while here on the public forum. This forum is visible to all, not like the public forums. Verbal slander does NO one any good here, and while it's your right, I am politley asking for all parties of the slander to not do it here..... I'm not a moderator, just a below average A-hole, but the point has been brought up that these public forums are visible to our visitors. In a discussion with moderators regarding some of my past posts, it's clear they have the intention to keep it clean. In my thoughts as to WHY I like it here so much, the polite banter and real techincal help are the reasons I keep coming back. I REALLY like it here at the TDR, and in such, want to help keep it as clean as I can, as that is one of the reasons I like it so much here. Please. A heated discussion can still take place, but just a few manners can be used to keep it civil.
