First let me say this, ignorant know-it-all's **** me off to no end. More later.

Questions...

Does anyone know offhand which Cummins engine would be in a Hyundai (or other) track-hoe? What about which Cummins would be put in a RV/motorhome (the one I'm discussing here is a late 90's model).


To tie my first comment with the questions, I was at the pain-in-laws this evening and my FIL & BIL were chatting it up. They both drive Chevy's with the Duramax. FIL has a 07 and BIL has a work issued 04. BIL's truck is a stout tower, FIL's is a dud.

As is usual with these two they start ragging on Dodge and Cummins. Saying the only thing Cummins is good for is fuel economy compared to the others, especially the Duramax. Since they both work with heavy equipment, they both think they know everything there is to know about every diesel engine out there. My wife's grandmother has a RV with a Cummins in it. I was told it was around a 250ish size motor. FIL kept saying they overheat like crazy then have nothing but problems and his Hyundai track-hoe and the mentioned RV both had to have the motor replaced.

On and on went their BS.

I know they're full of scheit. But I want clarification on which motors would be found in the above mentioned equipment.

Ignorance can be overcome by education. Stupidity is for life.

I'm really beginning to wonder about some people...

A good chance the motor home had a 5. 9. A lot of motor homes used it with horsepower ratings up to the 330HP range and possibly higher. As for the track hoe it may have been a 4 cylinder B series of if bigger ones possibly the 5. 9. Both these engines have been used in hundreds of applications from pumping to farm & industrial equipment and even marine applications. I see a lot of the 4 cylinder Cummins in the oil patch for generation. As for dumbheads a Duramax dude asked me if my truck could handle my Mobile Suites and the Polaris Ranger on a trailer behind it and if the truck had turbo boost. How do you answer that? There are a lot of unimformed people out there.

Remember the Bosch injectors we knew as RV275s we retrofitted into our 24 valve Cummins engines? Those injectors were OEM installed in the 5. 9 engines used in some motorhomes. Some earlier and larger motorhomes may have used the 8. 3 liter Cummins which was similar to but larger than the engines used in our Dodge platforms.

Your in laws would provide some unpleasant evenings. Even Chevrolet/GM who participated with Isuzu in designing and building that pos Duradud V8 engine knew it's limitations. Chev/GM installed small Caterpillar 7. 3 inline six diesel engines in their old Class 6 and 7 mdts before they gave up and left the mdt market. My memory is unclear but Chev/GM may have even offered the Cummins B5. 9 in some mdts. Furd did.

Too many variables here. You need the model and year to search for info. It appears the mini excavator uses a Yanmar engine, the mid sized are Mitsubishi and the larger ones use Cummins. Which Cummins? Probably depends on the size of the machine. Same thing goes for Motorhomes. The rear engine models have had heating issues due to the air flow restrictions that are part of the built in design flaw. It requires a huge overbuilt cooling system to over come this problem that some builders just never seemed to understand. The engine power unit gets the blame when it is not the engines fault.

Here is a list of Cummins engines and specs for Ag, Construction equipment, mining equipment, ng, otr, mdt, public transport, marine, rv, etc. Down towards the lower right you will see the list for rvs. Cummins has so many joint ventures with companies all over the world its nearly impossible to list everyone they are either parnters with or have contracts with to provide their engines to. Izuzu doesnt hold a candle to the depth of Cummins, Inc when you look at the "big picture" :D

Nor is it the engines fault when the operator fails to regularly blow the radiator out of his construction equip and it overheats. Ive had to remove and blow many out just for that reason. People think that just because its meant to run in the dirt they dont have to maintain it :rolleyes:

Not to mention that the poor engineering of some RV fan drive units, most hydraulic drive fan units found on an RV are a nightmare.



They try to imitate the units found in the big MCI and Prevost coaches, but fall short.



An air operated fan clutch works a lot better in my opinion even in a remote belt drive and gearbox situation such as a LH mount radiator.



An MCI bulletin as to the three stages of clutch fan operation, how to lock it in for constant drive in event of a failure and look, a real driveshaft.

And following Curtis' line of thinking, ask them why if V8 diesels are such an excellent design do 100% of OTR tractors use inline six cylinder diesels, some of them made by Cummins and the rest made by Caterpillar, Volvo, MB, or Navistar which vary little from a Cummins inline six.

I know he kept saying last night it was a 6B_ (Not T as I would have remembered that). The 5. 9s found in the Rams were 359 and the newer 6. 7 is 409. If one powering a RV is only 250... that's rather small.

The track-hoe was an older model but its size would tell me it was around a small 200 series. His new Linkbelt 210 is larger than the Hyundai. As far as the cooling system being the culprit... facts and logic wouldn't affect their ignorance.

They're like the 'rats... facts and logic have no room in their world as they know everything there is to know about diesels as they operate heavy equipment.

I think when they were talking "250" they meant horse power not cubic inch.

It's very hard to do but it's usually best to smile and ignore fools like your in-laws. They won't listen to or understand an intelligent and rational argument and as you said, they already know everything they want to know.

yeah, you are out numbered standing there with two bowtie lovers... might as well drink up all the free beer they offer, smile, and wait on supper. If they REALLY get under your skin and wont let it go, remind them that at the end of the day, you are gonna put his daughter/sister in that Dodge and take her back to YOUR place... then point at the big sticker on your rear window that says, " I'd rather be Cummin than Strokin" lololol... .

Cblack, the last time I was working in Lafayette was around the same time the Aisin (spelling?) trans came out in the cab&chassis. The Coon@sses all made wild claims that Dodge had finally been shamed into installing the Allison and had to buy it from GM. Ignorance is more than ankle deep south of I-10. Good luck!

The old sayin never argue with an idiot, they will bring you down to their level and defeat you with ignorance, likely holds true in Mr. Blacks situation. . This being said, i could see no circumstance where i would be offended enough about my truck, engine or anything for that matter to warrant talking about a man's daughter. . I gave that b. s up 30+ years ago in middle school. . Jail bar's dont mean **** to some men when it comes to their children, I'am one of them... just sayin. . To the subject at hand . . Mr Black, inform the Gm lovers that the 5. 9 cummins nor the 3. 9 does not suffer from overheating issues related to the engine itself. . Cylinder wall thickness, water pump , thermostat and anything engine related to the b series engines were are well designed. . A 6bt overheating is related to the inj pump being turned way up, or the the application it's in not having a large enough cooling system. . My kobelco excavator with a 6bt in it is a prime example. . As was/are, my first gen dodges. .

His was a Hyundai excavator.

Funny that he doesn't even know the type of engine. He kept calling a 6bz...

I need to ask them why they don't put their precious Duramaxes in all the heavier equipment... Silence is what I'd get, and dumbfounded looks.
 
Come to find out you CAN not OVER TALK THEM. They will stand and yell till there heard above you and your desire to be heard. So just know for your self that you have the item that your happiest with and smile and grin and know that for sure. His daughter must be happy. or you'd be a lone. Remember we all have this kind of idiot to deal with. It hurts when the truth come out, and they don't realize it, till later.
