I stumbled across an 06 3500 4x4 mega with about 125k miles. I am going to go look at it in the morning I am comfortable about what to look for on the drive train, but are there any quirky things about the 06's to look for. Truck isn't exactly what I would pick out but price is way to good not to at least consider.

It has a cm skirted flatbed on it. The pictures make the ball look like it is a little behind the axle. Do any of you have experience tow with the cm short bed flat beds.

No experience with the CM flat bed... ..... but as far as the cab... .

Possible Negatives... .

1) Driver's seat will need the rug/foam build-up

2) Some issues with '06 dash clusters, check tach operation closely

3) Barely adequate A/C

4) Check both rear door windows closely for chips and cracks, they bothered on some Megas (I have had to change the RR already)

5) Check all heater control functions including recirc

6) Battery power needs to be disconnected for a reboot when temp display flips out and the dome lights won't stay on more than 5 seconds, about once a year

Positives... ... .

1) Tight, quiet cab

2) All kinds of places to store one's crap, even behind the rear seats in the floor

3) More dome lights than a School Bus (if you can't find something the kids dropped on the floor after dark with the door open you shouldn't be driving)

4) Rear doors open 90 degrees (make sure kids and adults are careful in a parking lot in regards to other vehicles and objects), worse if wind is blowing.

5) Very easy to tend car seats, load cargo, etc.

6) Swiss Army Knife rear seats, fold the backs down alone or pull the lower release and the whole seat kneels to create a flat floor

7) Interior fabric dirties easily, but cleans equally easy. A Bissell Pet Pro will bring the whole thing back to new in about a half hour

8) Rear seating is superior to the front for comfort

There is no going back once you have one.

JMHO.

Also there is the problem of the trailer turn signals not working. Called TPIM. This needs re-flashed from the dealer. will only take a few times of re-flash then its a replacement. Expensive. But there is a solution that has been made here on the TDR for this if it has the problem. Check this out if its been used for towing.

Thanks for adding that. I don't think of it because I haven't tripped mine YET..... :D

Once I do I won't forget to mention it..... :{

Mike. :)

All the friends that I have who have towed with a short cab... have at one time or another hit the cab with the trailer... in each case they have gotten into a spot where, because of traffic, or some distraction have bumped the cab with the trailer... . Than after the truck repair they purchased a hitch that would allow them to move the hitch back...

I'd like to have a Mega Cab and I now use a flat bed on my 3500 dually but I'd stretch the frame before I towed. .

The only thing I would like to add to the above is the Mega, due to it's long wheelbase, does not turn as short or as quickly get one into trouble like a quad cab shorty will.

It can still be done without a doubt, just harder to do.

No slider hitch on mine. I will buy one the day that I can't put the trailer down front for the winter anymore without damaging the cab.

So you can do quite a bit without a slider on a Mega... IMHO

Mike. :)

Reason I mentioned it is my neighbor, has 06 mega cab and it cost him $85. 00 to have it reset. The dealer really questioned wither he knew what he was talking about. and said that maybe a new part was to be installed. $$$

Well the truck was a good one the interior needed a good cleaning and a little work on drivers seat, but some where we got our wires crossed and it was a six speed. Wife said no to six speed. O well guess I am back to spending 50k on a new one.

Just out of curiosity, how much were they asking? I love my '06 and would consider another for the right price.

Always check the hour meter total when buying used. Sometimes a lower mileage truck will have many more hrs on it than a higher mileage one.

Something else to check is operation of the vain that changes air flow on heat/air from floor, dash, defrost. That and ball joints has been the most trouble I had with my 2006 3500 Megacab @ 105K miles. I do tow light and have not had the trailer light problem. I did not want cloth interior and purchased custom leather out of Oklahoma City.
