Ok, I know there has been a lot of discussion about the length of the wheel studs in the Dynatrac Freespin kit.

I did some searches of the forum before I had mine installed a couple of years ago. Didn't think much about it as I haven't had time to cut the big holes in the covers till now. I seem to remember that if you had steel wheels, the covers wouldn't go all the way on but if you had aluminium rims you'd be fine. Well, I cut the holes and the covers stop about 1/4" shy of the aluminium rim. I went back and searched again, but could not find the definitive answer I was hoping for.

So, looks like I'll just pull the system apart for a clean and regrease. While its all apart I'll put some shorter wheel studs back in. My question is this, will stock studs be long enough? On Rock Auto I found the stock studs are listed as 2. 52", anyone know how long the Dynatrac supplied ones are? And while we're on the subject of Rock Auto, any difference in quality between Dorman, Raybestos and Wagner? The cost per stud is similar but I am more interested in quality for this particular item.

Hmmm. I just installed the free spin setup from Spintech, the shorty version, and the wheel studs are the same length as the rear wheel studs. After I drilled the holes for the hubcaps, I couldn't get the caps on all the way. Turned out I needed to open the holes a bit more as it was rubbing on the hub. If your studs stick out as much as the rear, try filing a bit more away from the caps. It worked for me. I used a 4 1/8" hole saw and a round file for the last touches.
Good luck.

I used the supplied studs and used a air tool to cut off 3/8 inch. The only shorter studs I could find were made where I ain't real fond of buying stuff from, especially critical stuff. Just make sure you have the lug nuts on before you cut!! Mark

The studs on my Yukon kit allow for installation of the caps without modification, maybe see if they will fit?

Not too Shure of Dorman quality or origin. Customer wanted to save some money on a common rail v/cover gasket. He brought in a gasket from Dorman, made in china. The scary part was if you had a pre 06 they include a couple wiring pigtails to butt splice your injector harness

Never had any issues with the caps fitting. Never had to shorten the studs. Now has anyone noticed that the 2012 and newer trucks have a different stud than the older trucks? The old stud was 9/16 new stud is metric. The new stud is easy to cross thread... ...

The Dorman studs I used were made in USA, but this goes back to 2007. Don't know where they're made today, but anything is possible.

I questioned ( in my mind) why I needed to change the studs in the first place. I did it anyway. When I got around to installing my caps ( I have the stock aluminum rims ) I cut the holes only to find it wouldn't go on all the way. To save time I just used a small disc cutter and cut the studs back to just where the threads started. The caps fit fine. Only problem is the black coating on the hubs doesn't go all the way to the chrome cap so it look bad. Shad
