Ok,

Getting ready to rebuild my 48RE, Need some feedback on what components to buy.

Truck will be towing mostly with some mild power upgrades 100 to 200hp

So, is a master kit way to go? Which one? Software upgrades?

What Torque converter to use? I want a billet, single lock? Low stall speed?

What’s up with the OEM trans cooler, I keep hearing they need to be by passed?

My son is going to college for auto mechanics and has a trans class and will be doing the rebuild with a top line instructor

Thanks

Kyle

Call Goerends and get their master kit. Discuss your needs with him and have him build you a TC, they still has the best TC on the market I feel. Their master kits are top of the line and he will put in all the needed parts.

The air to fluid cooler can stick the thermostat and stick in bypass mode. Usually it is pretty easy to pop the cap out and pul the thermostat for cleaning or put it in backwards to lockout the bypass. Otherwise it is a solid unit that does quite well.

WOW, just called Goerends, talked to some women, $4800 just for parts? They maybe the best, but I can not afford them.
When I told her that was too much, she got bent and started arguing/yelling with me. No way I am going there.
Anyone else have recommendations?
Thanks
Kyle

Good Grief!!! Did you ask for all billet parts and the most expensive TC they have???? The $4800 is more like a built transmission not the basic parts.

Don't know she asked a bunch of questions like what I tow, ie 10k lb 5th wheel, and what kind of mods did I have, told her stock but I would like down the road to add a 100hp. she starts quoting things like a valve body, forged this and that billet other stuff etc. Asked how much and she said $4800, and I said way too much and they were way higher than other companies, then she started getting rude and loud. I stopped listening and hung up. later some guy called and want to talk pricing, I told him I wasn't interested anymore and not to call back when he got pushy. I don't know if they were having a bad day or what, but I am not going to spend my hard earned money on some company that I have already had issues with.
I did get a quote for $3100 for a built trans from Transtar with billet and forged componets, triple lock converter and a 500K 3 year warranty with $1000 labor reimbursement if it breaks. That's having my son put it in at college to get the warranty. the college talks very highly of these guys, but I am going to do some checking before I drop the cash.

truck is a 305 hp

I don't like to talk to anybody but Dave because they don't understand what I am looking for on the technical end. That quote might have been for a built transmission, they have a 3rd party doing that now.

The $3100 sounds like a good deal for what you want, that is about what I had into mine.

Just spent an hour on the phone with Dave and will spending some $$ for parts. He has some technology I want. :)

Well tired in dealing with this transmission crap, did some more research, truck is in Greenville getting a rebuild right now. I must have called 20 plus shops, most did not have a clue about the 48re. I called Greenville Transmission Clinic and an older German guy started asking questions, and then told me what he recommended which was right on track with what I wanted. On top of that he uses nothing but Amsoil. Price sounds good so they are working on it now.
For places to avoid STAY AWAY from Transtar, Price went from $3200 to $4200, and their rep told me their too busy with large orders to deal with single orders/one time orders.
I have never heard so much BS in my life !
I will let you know how the rebuild goes.

Hey Kyle,

I know this is a super old post, but I live in Greenville, and I'm needing some work done on my 06 48re. How is your transmission doing since using Greenville Transmission? I'm running a Smarty touch and plan on pushing an extra 150 to 200hp, and I tow about 12k every other weekend. I've been looking at Garmon's and Carolina Diesel Performance, but both are pretty pricey. I've heard a lot of good things about GTC, but only on regular passenger cars, not for more performance minded builds.

Jonathan,
I give Greenville Transmission Clinic a BIG thumbs up!!!! ending up spending about $4000 at the end but it has been worth it. had 2 problems and they took care of them without question and no charge. Transmission had a valve body issues and they pulled it out rework it, board out some valving and beef it up. today I love the way it shifts both empty and heavy loaded. empty under wot it pulls like you wound not believe. loaded temps stay way down and works great with my mods. The owner Hemi, has turned over the shop to his son and he is awesome to work with. he must get a kick out of my truck because he will not let anyone test drive it but him.
So at the end of the day would I go back Greenville Transmission Clinic the answer is a big YES. Their phone # is 864-246-6870

Thanks for the input! I live near Furman, about 5 minutes from his shop, so it would be very convenient for me in case anything were to go wrong. If you don't mind me asking, what all have you had done? New TQ converter, VB,etc?

If I remember correctly, most of the transmission had billet upgrades and it has a triple lock low stall billet converter. extra clutch disks were added, full upgrade to valve body and shift kit with upgraded solenoids and pressure sensors. They also installed a extra deep billet transmission pan. I am sure I missed some things. ALSO KEEP IN MIND GTC KNOWS ALL about my truck upgrades and still BACKS a 3 year 100k warranty!!!
They are also a very high tech shop, they do all their own machine work on site and have the latest scan tools.

Kyle,

I really appreciate the information. I'll go talk to him this week, and mention your name and truck. I've been looking for someone close, who knows their stuff. I've already dropped the pan and adjusted the bands, replaced the fluid, new Borg Warner gov. pressure solenoid, transducer, and new filter. I still get some shutter between 1 and 2 and the overall shifting just feels really sloppy.

Let me know if you're ever up this way again, would love to check out your truck.

Let them know what you have planned for your truck and they will take it from there, they like working outside the box. its not cheap but the service is great and they know what they are doing which is a pleasant change. it sucks to have to explain how a rebuilder needs to do their job. and for the record they are the ONLY service shop in South Carolina I trust.

FWIW:
I have two Goerend built transmission's in my 06 Rams and have had conversations before, during and after the rebuilds which were both done in 2012.[ no problems, just great results] Dave, Darla and the other folks at Goerends always were very polite, knowledgeable and never tried to oversell or up-sell anything. [maybe there is a price, quality relationship after all is said and done] What you describe as them "having a bad day" certainly does not fit how they have achieved their great reputation. I believe that I got what I paid for, and would do it all again with confidence that I was getting the best.
CrewCabDiesel, sounds that maybe YOU were having the bad day. In any case, putting the bad mouth on Goerends because of "someone" having a bad day does not hold as much water as maybe you just not liking the price. It appears that you would be a great customer and shame on those 20 or so shops that missed the opportunity to do business with you, que lastima ! Chipster

Well I like my Goerend stuff but I have to agree, that gal on the phone at Goerend is a real tart. Dave was pleasant and easy to talk to but that woman was never nice to me on the phone.....even when she took my 4k.

As I said, they tried to oversell me a transmission I didn't need and were over priced and when I call them on it to see if they could do better, they got rude. IN ANY book that is poor customer service, and there is always another choice and thanks to them I found it. And that is what I am talking about, I have received great service and value from someone else and I am passing that on!
