Are there any other options to acquiring a StarScan Tool? I have some software for reading and clearing codes but I'd like to be able to go a little "deeper".

Problem with StarScan is the cost. Anywhere from $2K and up on ebay. Have heard of the Auto Enginuity software but it seems to be more of a parameter monitoring application. Have also seen the Auto Logic stuff which seems to be an aftermarket version of the StarScan but have no idea how much they are.

I appreciate any and all replies.

StarScan will only work up to 2010 or so depending on vehicle line. Unless you spend the money for a subscription for wi-Tech and purchase a POD, you are left with aftermarket tools only.

WiTech is Chrysler's diagnostic box and software used on Turbo Diesels for the past 6-7 years. The change from DRB3 was about 2006 iirc. There are a lot more thiings that can be monitored, etc. I reported some of them in reent issues of the TDR magazine. The Pod is the wireless connector from the truck to the scan tool computer.

My truck is 2006, wife's Jeep is a 2004 so I should be good there.

What's wi-tech and a POD?

The wi-tech is what we use now for can-bus cars,it is also wireless. The pod is the wireless device that attaches to the obd port. The Jeep is still a drb car

Wow!! And I thought the StarScan was expensive! The cost of getting the witech hardware and software sure is prohibitive for your average shadetree mechanic.

I understand Chrysler has a need to protect its dealers income streams from the service department, but wowzers!

I guess I'll just keep an eye on eBay and hope I can get a StarScan cheap. Unless anyone here has one for sale?!?

Axion, even thought the ability is not even close to the StarScan, I recommend the Kiwi wifi setup that I'm using. It can read and clear codes as well as give you the operating parameters of your engine for any make, as long as it is OBDII capable. The cost is about $200. 00 that would include the devise and a good App for your smartphone, but you need a smartphone to use it.
