They were cut because the previous owner beat the crap out of this thing... The head was cut first... Found out that the block needed cut too because the corner was warped... So previous owner managed to get this thing so hot that he successfully warped the block... After the head and block were done the pistons had to be cut because of the amount of material cut from both.

If that is the case a compression test to see where each cylinder is at would be a good idea before the engine comes back apart.

A bad head gasket could really pressurize the crankcase, in which case I think the blowby vapor would be pulsing.

Cutting the pistons was not the way to take care of the problem (thicker head gaskets) is how to take care of that problem.
