3rd Generation 6.7L Engine and Transmission FAQ's

Mine will do the regen at idle as described above.

I think it did that with OEM software meaning before I had one reflash done about three years ago.

Sometime in MY08 the idle regen "net zero idle" IIRC OEM software was released. MY07. 5's don't have it unless flashed.

Was going to stop at dealer to see what flash I had as the decal is clean. Do you or anyone know what the last flash for 7. 5 yr was, I think I have AZ? Thanks

Fred

I've had my truck for about 2 months now with about 3000 miles on it. I've yet to see it go into regen. When did you first notice your truck in regen?

I think I found out when mine went into regen, I only have 1200 miles on it, 900 are highway, the rest are local driving, I have not towed yet, that will happen next week, but I was pulling in the garage, and I just ran the wiring for my Transfer Flow fuel tank and it smelled like something was burning, I think it was in regen mode, and all those gum stickers that were on the DPF and Cat were melted.

You drive it. Get on the highway and drive it continually at highway speed for 45 minutes or until the light clears itself. 45 minutes round trip is okay, just don't stop and turn it off.

You may have been making too many short trips which allow inadequate driving time for the engine to regen the DPF.

Daniel Shea, I wish I would have seen your post and Harvey's response before last Saturday. We drove the truck from Indy to Casper WY for my nephew's wedding, I wanted to take it to let my 15 yr old son learn to drive and get somewhat familiar with driving a stick. Upon arrival at our hotel with our dog, we were told if we left the dog in our room and they found out they would call the Humane Society, so my wife freaked and we took the dog everywhere leaving the engine idle with the AC on since it was so hot in Casper. Driving back to our hotel on I-25 the "80% full" message came on, continued driving and it went off along with the check engine light. So we assumed all was well. Started home Sunday and the Check Engine Light came on again about 60 miles outside of Lincoln, NE while we were on a dirt road getting around some backed up traffic in a construction zone on I-80. We called my recently retired buddy, a former Chrysler tech for 25+ years. After answering his questions that the truck had no loss of power and was running normally, he though we would be OK to continue on to Indy and get it checked out when we returned home. Check Engine Light was off the next morning when we left the motel, we headed on to St. Louis and caught a ballgame, then headed on to Indy on Tuesday. Wednesday the message center came on telling me the "DPF 100%" full, drove the truck about 45 minutes and it went off again. Took the truck into the dealer and for its Friday appointment and was told the codes were: P2463 DPF Soot accumulation, P2262 Turbo Mechanical Boost Pressure, and P1451 DPF System Performance. They said they needed to Reflash, clean the turbo & EGR ports, and Regen the DPF manually. That and a fuel filter was $582! For a truck with only 30,595 miles! I've owned a CTD 14 of the past 19 years, I bought this one a year ago after my '01 transmission died in WY visiting my brother last year. I've never had to have a turbo cleaned nor heard of it after joining TDR about 10 years ago. What can I do to monitor this? Is Edge the answer? A code reader to do a manual regen? When I drive to work it's about 15-16 miles one way with a short interstate drive (about 3-4 miles). I also haul a large Host Truck camper and tow an 18 foot Lund.

I had the edge insight shortly after I bought my 11,
at 4000 miles check engine light came on. I brought it
to the dealer they said O2 sensors were all sooted up and if
it happens again they will void my warranty because there
tech said my tuner (edge insight) caused the sooting.
That was the straw that broke the camels back so to speak.
So at 4000 miles I fully deleted, 30,000 miles later no problems
the truck is just fantastic, and dodge could go shove there useless
warranty and service dept.

The Dodge warranty is not really the problem. Its often the untrained service department parts changers. There aren't many genuine mechanics around anymore and fewer still who have been trained or self-trained on diesel engines.

Dodge has trained them to look for modifications. Most don't own Dodges w/Cummins engines, don't understand diesel performance, and are not enthusiasts so to them gauges, even analog gauges, and any magic black box is a modification. I had one give me a lecture once about analog gauges, an aftermarket Transfer Flow fuel tank, and something else that was so unrelated and insignificant that I've already forgotten what it was.

At this point there isn't much you can do. A monitor, like the Insight, is just a monitor and won't let you do anything.

If you intend to keep your emissions equipment intact I would ensure your ECM software is up to date, as the first few 07 flashes were hard on turbo's, but they did get the bugs worked out.

hi,i`m a new 6. 7 owner mine is an 09 3500 laramie, i never know when mine is in regen but i noticed that anytime i leave it idleing it will automatically rev up the engine to 1000rpms . also there is a strange smell from the exhast smells almost like javex bleach ha h ah ha its not at all like an engine should smell. my truck only has a little over 50000klms and in winter is used as a short run commuter. any thoughts on that smell or the heightened rpms?

The smell probably emanates from the truck's soot oven or dpf as part of the regen process. I think there are two reasons for the advanced idle speed. One might be occurring in cold temps to warm the engine and cab and the other might be part of the net zero program that allows longer idle periods without adding soot to the dpf.

my oh my, where to start, Regen then dump into oil and is supposed to be disposed of in that way. I had an old timer tell me EVERY time you see the regen change the oil when it's done as all that crap is now in your oil supposedly to be burned off by the engine! not. I fixed it by putting a black maxx on and removing the offending piece of engineering put on by Dodge when designing this system. The truck get double the mileage, runs cooler, cleaner, and more efficient. BTW dealer told me it would be about $2800 to replace filter and set up regen system again after 4 or 5 regens filter is burned out and needs to be replaced depending on your driving habits.

Do you realize that regens happen on average around every 150-200 miles?

What your mechanic told you is that you need to change the oil every 200 miles and the DPF every 1000 miles??

The system does leave room for improvement, but it does work well as a whole. A delete kit is a great way to fix it, but not an option for many.

There is very little about your post that is accurate, true, or relevant. The REGEN/DPF scare is, by most accounts, a non issue. My truck has been rock solid to date and I don't expect that to change anytime soon.

Best,

GCP
