A few question:

1 - If you were to be buying a new IC for your truck, what would you get? Banks? Spearco?

2 - For those of you that have purchased aftermarket units, was it worth it? Did you see that much of a drop?

3 - Is there anywhere that has the flow and EGT number drop on the same engine so that everything is consistent? I dont like advertising info, I want REAL info. ;)

I ask as I need to put a IC into the 1990 this winter. I am heat soaking the current one. But I am not sure if it iw worth spending the money on something good, or just getting a stockers and slapping some fresh paint on it. :-laf

Boost numbers will be around 40-45 psi and heavy emphasis on towing, not stop light racing. :D

The lack of a intercooler in the early Dodge's make then undesirable as motors, I've heard.
I know BD makes a intercooler, they are over $1000 I think about $1200, but they are 50% bigger or have 50% more cooling. I would think you could pick up a used Dodge intercooler for a few hundred, I don't think they wear out, as long as you keep things out of them (oil, water, etc.) I haven't heard of too many people replacing their inter coolers with anything bigger, I think Dodge did pretty good on them.
I think he earlier Dodge's had a smaller radiator too (I may be mistaken) I recently read a older TDR issue that talks about intercoolers and the earlier Dodges.

Saw an oem IC with metal ends from a 2005 CTD for $200 on one of the other forums..I can try to find the ad if you are still looking for one.

I recommend the BD intercooler, and consider it essential for high boost engines because it does not have aluminum foil stuffing that bunches up in the tubes of most brands. See a brief writeup in my column Issue 60 p. 92 and an in-depth design discussion in issue 68, p. 90. BTW, don't paint it with standard paint or you will impair heat transfer.

Are you using a 1st gen intercooler now? I would think that with the small inlet/outlet, 40-45 psi boost would be restricted. Install a boost gauge at the turbo outlet and check for pressure drop. I would think the larger 2nd gen would be much better but the mods to install might be a bummer. Just for your consideration, I checked my '01 for pressure drop and I had none. However my max boost is only 32psi.

Thanks for all the replies!

So to update as this question was from a while ago...

Due to only running up to 40 psi, I decided a factory 2nd gen unit should work. Picked up a pressure tested one for $150 so can't complain.

Yes, currently a aftermarket gen 1 system. And yes, at 36 psi, it is restrictive and heat soaking.

Working on installing this in the next week or two. :)
