Any news on availability of 2014 Ram 2500

Well, I did it! I sold my '03 Ram 2500 CTD and bought a new 2013 Ram 2500 Laramie. So far, I really like it and I'm fairly impressed with it. My '03 had 175K miles on and was still running great, I had all of the upgrades on it that I wanted, and it has long since been paid for. So why did I sell it? Basically, it was starting to show its age and it was a matter of numbers. I had been watching the value of my '03 on KBB (Kelley Blue Book) for that last few years and it finally came to the point where if I could still get enough money out of it for a nice down payment on a new one and still have some cash left over for goodies. So I had "that conversation" with my wife and after not too much wailing and gnashing of teeth she saw where I was coming from so she gave me the nod. I have been really impressed at how well these gen 3's are holding their value. I sold mine foView attachment 86699View attachment 86700View attachment 86701r $14K and my wife's '04 with 98K miles is still worth, according to KBB, 50% of its original sticker price.

I must that getting into the new one is like crawling into the cockpit of a fighter jet compared to my '03. I treated myself and got a lot of bells and whistles on this one, some of which I'm still learning how to use, but was not available when I got my '03. My '03 was an SLT that was basically a Laramie minus the leather seats and one or two minor convenience packages. That was all you could get on them back then. It took DC (at the time) a couple of years of putting new stuff ino their cars before introducing it into the pickups. This is one reason why I think that Dodge lagged behind Ford in sales. I like how Chrysler has now stepped up to putting the latest techno gadgets and amenities into the Ram pickup line as fast as they are putting it into their luxury/sports cars. This has made them very competitive with Ford, and having the Cummins engine should give them the advantage. GM seems to have been pretty well left in the dust for the time being.

I am now on my 3rd Ram diesel. My first was a 1998. 5 (first model year for the quad cab and the 24 valve ISB). Had that one for 5 years, sold it because it had a short bed and with a saddle box, doesn't leave a whole lot of bed space. Sold it to a buddy of mine, whom I just talked with recently and he said he's still running it and has never had any issues with it. Got the '03 (first model year for the common high pressure fuel rail). I put a Banks Six-Gun package in it in 2008 for better fuel mileage, which it delivered along with a lot more power. Also upgraded the track bar and sway bar end links, put a 2" leveling kit on it, replaced all of the u-joints with Precision greasables, and the ball joints with Dyna Tracs, and had the in-tank lift pump conversion done. Basically I fixed all of the factory shortcomings with it and it both ran and drove really sweet. Still does too. Now with the 2013 (first model year for the SCR system I believe), I haven't seen a whole lot of need for upgrades besides shocks at some point. Everything else under there looks pretty beefy.

So what I like about the 2013 after three whole weeks is the power of the 6. 7L coupled with the 68RFE transmission and the 3. 42 rear end. WOW! This one has more power than my '03 did with the Banks tuner. It gets better fuel mileage than my '03 did stock, but not as good as my '03 tuned. Still, it's not bad. I'm having to learn how to drive it and it's been a little difficult. To begin with, the 6. 7L is so quiet that I really can't hear it. My old 5. 9L with the Banks upgrades was easy to drive because I could tell by the sound of the engine, turbo, and exhaust drone where I was at in the power band and rarely had to look at the speedometer to know how fast I was going. I do kinda miss those sounds and the puff of black smoke I could get when I really stepped on it. I also like the standard equipped exhaust brake. Found out how much I liked it in stop and go traffic one morning. Saved a lot of service brake use. I like the fuel filtration upgrades. Seems that Chrysler wants to keep up with the likes of Fass and Air Dog with the duel filters.

Some things I don't like are the TPMS. With as much research and care that Chrysler seems to have put into this truck, the one thing that they blatantly missed was the fact that one of the first things that most of us are going to do is put new rims and/or tires on it. New rims don't have the TPMS sensors and different sized tires don't run at the same pressure as stock. So we're stuck with the low pressure waring in the EVIC. Would be nice if the dealer could either disable it or reset the thresholds for the TPMS, but I'm not sure that is possible. I don't like the fact that they assume that every time I start I want to hear the radio. Most of the time I do, but there are times when I'd rather have a nice quiet ride. Not real wild about all of this new EPA crap (the SCR, DPF, etc. ). DEF is now an extra cost. Not that it's a whole lot, but it's still an extra cost. It also makes me wonder how much more power these 6. 9L's would have without all of the EPA crap. Another thing I'm not fond of is the capless fuel tank system. It has two flapper valves. One you can see, the other you can't. I found out the hard way while trying to add some Stanadyne the last time I refueled. Most of it ended up on the ground. It's only briefly mentioned in the "user's guide", that which now posseas a "User's Manual".

I'm sure that I will find more pluses and minuses as I gain experience with it, but aside from the nits I mentioned above, it's still a really nice truck.

Good read. I'm back on TDR as of this morning, and this is my first post. I will shortly be in for an even larger culture shock. My first & only Dodge/Cummins is my old red, faded '97 2500 2WD I bought brand new in the fall of '96. I've not sat in, or driven another since I've owned it. But with nearly 400k on it, I'm planning on ordering or buying a new 2014 Laramie 4X4 loaded up, around New Years. So... . I'm doing like I did in "96, Subscribing, reading & studying the best source for my affliction, the TDR. I can already see that I have a lot of catching up to do.

Todd, thanks for the advice! I was running Stanadyne in my '03 and still have some. I was just going to use it till I got rid of it. I'll start putting it in my wife's '04 instead.

Gonzo, thanks!

Very nice truck Tim. I too purchased a 2013 Ram 2500 Big Horn Edition. This is my first Ram truck. It was mainly purchased to tow my 5th wheel travel trailer. I haven't been on a trip yet, but was able to go up route 40 toward Edgewood and return home to Middle River. I was really satisifed with the overall performance of the truck. Mine happens to have a manual shifter and 3. 42 rear. The truck was on the lot with all the things I wanted so the deal was made. I'am not going in to the manual vs auto debate. Thats another thread. Nice to hear from someone fairly close by. Keep in touch.

Look at the DEF this way- it's not costing you money, it's saving you money. Any '07. 5- '12 owner will vouch for that. It saves money on fuel and the 3000 mile oil changes that you don't need anymore.

X2, I have broke the entire exhaust system down on My 13 TOP to tail pipe, installed 4 bolt flange so I can remove the SCR filter in minutes, My 13 with 5400 miles has Active regen 4 Times for a total of 38 miles gets great mileage and pulls awesome, O the system is always super clean and un-restrictive, I will probably add another 40-60 Hp and see NO reason to remove the exhaust at that power level, the 13s jump is worth the cost. RAM , Cummins, Aisin comb thumbs up.

LocoPilot750, welcome back! You definitely came to the right place for the information you're looking for.

Caseylynn, thanks!

rscurtis, good point! I have to admit the 15K oil/filter change was very appealing vice the 6K I was doing on my '03.

I joined the Gen 4 crowd 3 weeks ago. I went for a 2000 SWB 2500 5 spd, to a 2002 SWB 2500 Auto to a 2004 LWB 2500 Auto to a 2008 LWB 3500 SRW Auto to a 2013 LWB 3500 DRW Auto.

Just the difference between the 2008 and 2013 is impressive with the power and refinements.

JumboJet, I saw your post when you first put it up. Nice rig!

Nice truck Tim, I love the way you have it setup. How do you like those Goodyear tires so far. We have a set on my wife's 4Runner and they have been great so far.

Thanks for the compliment! I really like the Silent Armors. This is the second set of them I've had. I had one set on my '03 and a set of Duratracs (they were on it when I sold it). Between the two, I like the Silent Armors a bit better than the Duratracs. The Silent Armors do not make the road noise that the Duratracs do, do better in wet weather, and I feel are a bit better in the snow. I also put a set of them on my wife's '04 and she's been pretty happy with them. When I was getting these put on my truck a few weeks ago, the guys at the tire shop were telling me that Goodyear is discontinuing the Silent Armors because of stability issues on light duty trucks/SUV's. But they said they work really well on our HD trucks. They said that you pretty much can't get them in the P-metric sizes anymore, but there is still plenty of stock in the LT sizes. The newer tire that is replacing the Silent Armor is called the All Terrain Adventure. The tread pattern on the Adventure is similar to the Silent Armor except that it doesn't have the two wide gaps between the outer ribs and the inner ribs like the Silent Armor has. The guys at the tire shop aren't convinced that the Adventure will clean out as well as the Silent Armor and neither do I after seeing a set of P-metrics they had just gotten in when I was there. I guess that we'll find out. If you want a set for your HD, my advice would be to get them now before they're all gone.

Tlong, beautiful truck! The fuel cap issue can be solved by getting the lattest GENOS fix which I just installed on mine tonight. Fits good, looks good. $12 and change. The DEF fluid is cheap at truck stops. I buy mine at pilot for about $2. 79 a gallon. In the store, per gallon, $6... . The radio deal is screwly but oh well. My biggest gripe is what they did when they changed the shift pattern on the 2013 from 2012. I had a 2012 MAx tow dually with the 68 RFE that shifted like a regular transmission. for 13, RAM apparently decided to "flare" the shift pattern to lessen the hard shifting the 2012 had. Now you can hear/feel the engine rev 2-400 RPM inbetween 4 to 5th to 6th. The rumor is they may(not holding my breath anymore) come out with a flash to tighen up the shift pattern which they have done for the 2014 model year apparently. The MPG is MUCH better then 12 and oil changes are much better thanks to DEF. The 3:42's, to my surprise dont hamper the tow ability at all. The Cummins engine as expected is flawless.

Another fix for the capless fuel fill is an ABS plumbing cap, 1. 5" nominal, from Home Depot. Shorten it to . 7-. 8" and chamfer the top edge so it will clear the fuel door. It is a snug fit on the filler pipe.

Bug Out / Joseph Donnelly, thanks for the advice and compliments! With the capless fuel fill, I'm not so much worried about contaminants getting in (though I probably should be, the seal around the fuel door I'm sure will wear out) as I was upset about the second flapper valve which seems to seal quite well. The neck on the bottle I had the Stanadyne in wasn't long enough to engage that second valve and it went every where but where I wanted it to. I have experienced that rev you mentioned once or twice. Didn't know what was up with that and it didn't feel quite right. Now I know. Will be watching for the flash update (hopefully). I picked up some DEF at NAPA earlier in the week. They have it on sale right now. I got a case (2 x 2. 5 gal. ) for about $20 and it's Valvoline. They also have Premium Blue on sale now too. Just curious, how many miles are you all getting on a DEF tank? I've got a little over 1300 miles on mine and the DEF is just a bit above half.

At one point I was considering getting a 2011. After reading some of the experiences and comparisons of the 2010-2012 with the 2013, I'm now glad I waited. I do appreciate all of the input and recommendations though! You all are helping me get up to speed on the gen 4's faster than I would have on my own.

TLong, I forgot to mention... With all the gitup and go these new ones have, the temptation to "go around " or pass the less then speed limit folks is almost hard not to do. . :) Especially those little snotty kids with their " fast and furious" little vacuum cleaner sounding zip zip cars, buzzing around like they have 'uncontrollable horses" under the hood... LOL
