A buddy just bought a super nice, clean 2008 auto 2500 4X4. This truck looks to have never been offroad with about 105K miles. It does have 5" exhaust with the DPF deleted and runs great with lots of black smoke when punched.

Now for the question, how does the unschooled determine what's been done to turn up the fuel so it can be taken back to stock levels? They don't need the additional power and the smoke is definitely not welcome. I'm guessing there's no obvious tuner box and it'll all programming. Not having kept up with the last several years worth of change I'm lost. From what I've read (just in a curiosity kinda way) you've got to have a aftermarket tune to keep from throwing codes so a stock tune isn't an option.

Two closing details, our state currently doesn't have any type vehicle inspections, and he didn't get any of the stock exhaust system with the truck. Bought from a used vehicle dealer not the original owner.

Any leads appreciated on how to return both the power to stock and where to find a full replacement exhaust system to return the emissions hardware to stock should it be necessary down the road (fully expect this will be required sooner rather than later).

Thanks

If there isn't a H&S MM or BM in it then I would guess it has been tuned by smarty.

Did he buy it from a dealership or private party?

If it was a dealership and he wants it back to stock he will have to buy a DPF, and have them reflash the ECM to stock. Or he can tell them to do it since they sold him a vehicle that is not legal for use on the road.

If it was private party ask the selling party if they still have the DPF and/or tuner used. It may cost him more money.

It is hard to tell what tuner was used to delete a truck just from a thread. There are several tuners that could have been used such as H&S, Edge, Smarty or Bully Dog. But since you did not indicate that there were no gages that are being displayed in a digital manner from a display unit. I will guess that a Smarty was used to allow the truck to run with deletes. This might be a JR or the S67 version of the Smarty depending on when the truck was deleted and how much were they willing to spend. The problem is that the Smarty's are all VIN lock to a specific truck so they cannot be used on multiple trucks to provide the delete or tuned program on a different truck. Also you cannot buy a new Smarty or any tuner that will allow a truck to run deleted now. So it will have to be returned to stock.

The truck could have also been deleted using what are called SIMMS devices these are resistors of certain ohm resistance that is put into the wiring to the ECM to fool it. The ECM still sense that the component is there so therefore the truck will not go into limp mode.

Now you may need to contact the new representative for Smarty if this is what is on the truck. I have included their web link for contact information. http://smartyresource.com/news-2.aspx

Now this is my humble opinion so take it for what it is worth. I could be totally wet or whatever in this but then again I might be correct.

I believe it is totally illegal to sell a truck missing the emission equipment that is mandated by federal law. So I would return to the selling dealer and have them restore the truck emission equipment and return the truck to stock at no charge. If they do not want to do this than I would contact the attorney general office for legal help in this matter. If your friend does not want to run a deleted truck. Also remember that it could cost up words of $4K to replace this equipment at a Ram truck dealer.

x2 on getting the dealer to return it to stock and put the traps back on it. You don't want the hefty fine if you ever get stopped in a random check. It should be their problem to figure out what is done and fix it.

Nice truck or not... . Anyone who buys a truck with all the emission equipment gone or deleted just bought themselves a can of worms. Hope he only paid about 2/3rds. of what the truck is really worth. He is going to need that 1/3rd to get it back to legal status. My $0. 02 worth.

If it were me, I think I would get a firm quote from the most reputable RAM dealer I could find to get it back to stock. Then I would go to the used vehicle dealer where I bought it, show them the quote, then have them write me out a check for that amount. Then just get it fixed yourself. Who knows what kind of short cuts the seller might make. And if there are any penalties the seller could face for selling that truck like it is, he may just go for it.

Of course though. Since it is used, there may be an implied "as is" involved with the sale unless the seller had implied otherwise.
