CLICK HERE - to read the article. The article gives us a good understanding of what was added and how the emission works. I thought I would share this with everyone.

As is so often the case, the article is partially correct but has a lot of errors and omissions. A few are the changes Cummins has made in injection events and combustion chamber/cylinder head design, mileage improvements with the new DEF strategy, the date cracked cap rods were introduced (2003 not 2009).

I was hoping to hear your comments on the article. Thanks for chiming in. I figured there were some things missing. I'm still learning the diesel engine and loving everything I can find on the subject.
Anybody else have any input. Good or bad?

Regarding the cracked rods, I don't believe they're sintered like they are in the Ford, they're still forged steel but fracture split. This technology was used in chain saws and outboard motors in the 1950's and '60's to provide a smooth bore for needle bearings.

Why is it illegal for salvage yards to sell the DPFs?

I don't have an answer for you as to why, but not being allowed to sell emission parts isn't a new thing at least here in PA. Way back in '86 or early '87 I was rebuilding an '85 Blazer and I needed an exhaust with a CAT on it to pass inspection after the rebuild. Tried to buy one from a junk yard here and was told no for the same reason.

Now that is a scam! I can't think of one good reason why you shouldn't be able to buy a piece of equipment off of a totaled out vehicle sitting in a salvage yard... . it's not like you can cut any corners if you truly are trying to pass an e check, you still have to be able to pass.

Unfortunately, most of these gov regulations are beyond our ability to understand.

its illegal because federal emssions laws do not allow for moving emissions control devices from one vehicle to another once used. It really doesnt make sense to me, but automotive cats are not made and/or certified to be serviceable, only replaced. Once removed, they are suppose to go to a certified recycler.
THe CO catalysts commonly used on lean burn gas engines are certified and serviceable.
