So I'm wondering if the fuel filter gauge is based on a theoretical calculation or is it based on actual restriction using pressure sensors? At the rate I'm going, I won't need to change the filter till about 70,000 miles. Is that accurate? Does the pre filter under the truck make that big of a difference and the engine filter really will go that long?

Thanks guys!

My Fuel filter was going faster than my oil, fuel was down in the 70% range while oil was still in the 90% range. Then I got the updated TSB flash and I see my fuel filter is in the 90% range after the flashing. However I know the fuel filter wasn't reset as it still has the correct number of miles since the last reset on there. On my truck I had TSB 18-018-13 done because of the "Surging/Flaring" between shifts issue. I really didn't like that. Seems like the TSB has fixed that up to some degree (still seems to have that slight slipping feel between gears but not nearly as much and it doesn't seem to flare anymore between shifts) and fixed my fuel filter estimate as well. Also, manual states to do this every 30,000 miles or 24 months (2 years). I figure that's the CYA language.

My 2013 owners manual (diesel supplement) says to change my fuel filter every 15K or 12 months, whichever comes first. Ken Irwin

Well I'll be... , it is listed at 15k and 30k miles. So I guess it's going to be a yearly thing. Here's the excerpt from the owner's DVD

15,000 Miles (24,000 km) or 12 Months Maintenance Service Schedule
When prompted by the Engine Oil Indicator System, the engine oil and filter must be changed. If not prompted by the Engine Oil Indicator System within 15,000 miles (24 000 km) or six months since the last oil and filter change, change the engine oil and engine oil filter.

Check the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank, refill if necessary.

Rotate tires.

Replace engine fuel filter element.

Replace chassis mounted fuel filter element.

Lubricate front drive shaft fitting (4x4).

Lubricate outer tie rod ends.

Inspect the front suspension, tie rod ends and boot seals for cracks or leaks and all parts for damage, wear, improper looseness or end play; replace if necessary.

Inspect the front (4x4) and rear axle fluid, change if using your vehicle for police, taxi, fleet, off-road or frequent trailer towing.

22,500 Miles (36,000 km) or 18 Months Maintenance Service Schedule

Inspect drive belt, replace if necessary.

30,000 Miles (48,000 km) or 24 Months Maintenance Service Schedule

Mine was doing the same thing when I initially bought it. After one of the updates at the dealer, it ticks along right about the same pace of the oil filter life.

jus2shy, I noticed a bit better shift from the slop/flare shift it did from new. It still does it enough to make we want it fixed. Rumor has it, it could be a new flash by years end, or early next year for the final shift fix.

I'm at 12K+ and the filter minder says I have 60% or so left? 15K it is. .

Dont mean to derail this thread but I noticed it says 35mpg current. I know someone with a 2013 tradesman, 245 tires that swears he gets 28mpg freeway, I was just curious what real life mpg your actually seeing?

I get 15-16 around town. . I have not done any long freeway runs un loaded, but even on short hops, it will climb into 20MPG on the MPG gauge.

Well, depending on my driving duty cycle, it changes. But you can get an idea looking at my fueling history. When I'm mostly freeway, I get into the low 20's. When I'm more in-town heavy, then I'm around 17 or 18 mpg. I use a formula that relies on average speed to figure my duty cycle. 21mph or slower is 100% city, 48mph or faster is 100% highway.

Well, here's my casual observation about my vehicle. Note that I drive unloaded, I'm shopping for an RV and am about a year out.

Coolant: Seems to stay around 190 degrees, +/- 2 degrees. Highest I've seen was 198 or 200 degrees and then the thermostat opened up.
Trans Fluid: I could never get it past 170 degrees. It also takes about 30 minutes of driving to even get it up to 170 degrees
Oil: Seems to get to about 201 degrees and stay there.

Now I don't tow anything at this moment but this is unloaded and cruising around. Also, the air conditioning seems to work far better in this vehicle than any other diesel pickup I've ridden in. Seems like the new Cooler stack works really well.
