has anyone done a conversion from a 2500 to a 3500 dually? will the front and rear axles work without swapping them out

I did, all you need to do is have a 1/2" spacer for the rear so your rims won't hit the brakes, i had drum brakes not disc on rear, and buy the front extenders, your good to go, i also went to DMV and had title changed to 3500, I had a Dana 80 rear axle, switched out beds and wheels, Monte

You have to get the extenders for the front to run dually wheels on the front, you might be ok on the rear without the spacers, you'll just have to check and see, you can get the extenders from the dodge dealer, all one tons have them on the front, monte

The factory front adapters are bolted onto the 3/4 ton studs....

I'm curious how you got TX to change your title to 2,000lb carrying capacity.....

If your 2500 is an automatic, it still uses the Dana 70 instead of the Dana 80 rear axle, right? If so, then you won't have the axle load capacity of a true 3500. I would think a 3500 Dana 80 axle would be fairly easy to find in a wrecking yard.

It's easy -- you just change the decals on the door to 3500. Of course it doesn't change the GVW of the truck.

Just thinking out loud, couldn't that present a problem when the VIN and driver's door sticker identify it as a 2500 when it comes to resale? If a buyer thought he was buying a 3500 (not necessarily from you - perhaps a subsequent owner) and finds out the truck is a 2500, then he would have a good case for fraud, it would appear to me since the title and VIN don't agree insofar as identifying what the truck really is.

Changing the 2500 to a 3500 at the dmv is more about paying the appropriate fee for the amount of weight that you are legally able to haul without getting a ticket from law enforcement for being overweight than changing the model type as delivered from Dodge.

I'm not talking about registering it for any weight you want when you pay your annual registration fee - that's an entirely different thing than changing a Texas title which is supposed to accurately identify what the vehicle is. My Texas title, for instance, shows the manufacturer's load capacity as 1 ton. I would assume that a 2500 says 3/4 ton. Changing that to 1 ton is NOT the manufacturer's load capacity - as far as Dodge is concerned, it's still a 3/4 ton 2500.

Annual registration based on weight and obtaining a title are two separate events here in Texas.

Exactly why I asked.... Only way I know to change the title listed GVW is to rebuild the truck, using another 3500 VIN, and applying through the Texas Auto Theft Taskforce for a new VIN, using the 3500 VIN number......

Registration is completely different affair, handled at the county tax collector's office.

No, i went to the DMV and had my title changed to a 3500 one ton, They asked what i did to it and i told them i dualled it out, i gave them my title and got a new title that said one ton, 3500 dodge
