Def usage

What kind of mileage are most of you getting out of your DEF. I am assuming my new truck was completely full of DEF when I got it at least the gauge showed full. I now how 2100 miles and the gauge is showing less than an 1/8 of a tank left. Is that what I can expect or should it be doing better.

I got 1800 miles on the first half tank of DEF. Then 2300 and 2100 miles. Again that's only on half a tank. When the DEF gauge is showing just above half a tank, I top it off with a 2.5 gallon jug of DEF. Those miles are all road miles, no towing and only light hauling. If you are towing or hauling heavy you will go through your DEF quicker. It's proportional to your fuel consumption.

I averaged about 600 miles per gallon during the first 2000 miles. DEF showed about 1/2 when I filled it. Probably 2/3rds of that was with a 5000 lb trailer.

Got 1600 mpg out of my last tank. Right at 8000 miles. No towing though.

I used about 5 gallons in my first 2400 miles, almost 2000 of that was heavy towing.

The DEF gauage is not very accurate. I can go thousands of miles with out any movement then it will drop[ from full to half with in 450 miles.

This will explain why "full" is probably not actually "full." I'm sure Ram knows the exact amount of DEF to add to the tank for it to register as full and still be a couple of gallons short.

Well y'all make me feel better. I think I am going to go till the warning message comes on then add five gallons.

I measure the DEF by MPG if your Average MPG is 15 MPG = 700 MPG DEF, if you Average 10MPG =450 MPG DEF , I just returned form West Yellowstone, Form Beech ND to Blaine MN My Average MPG 6.6 Truck/Trailer (Fighting 30-50MPH Head Winds) = 300MPG DEF . I filled (DEF/Fuel) in Billings and I just now toped it off in the Shop 3 Gallons. The DEF usage is on-demand Fuel if system operates correctly. Both My 13s consume this rate.

No... fill DEF at 1/2 if you wait till the alarm and the DEF is bad......Your DAY will go to limp mode. It will take 2.5 Gallons at 1/2 tank

I just filled up with DEF 3 gals have 4930 miles on 2013 Laramie 2500 342 gears 1633 miles per gal DEF I have averaged 18.4 miles per gal diesel highway and off road average speed is only 45mph straight highway cruise set at 68 I get 21.3 love this truck

Thanks for the heads up TC I will add 5 gallons now. What you said makes lots of since. Have you seen many cases of bad DEF?

No... check the Dates stamp on the container or box, I would past on 9 months or older, also try and fill full if you live in cold climates 0-* a little under 1/2 takes 2.5 gallons.

How much does the DEF tank hold if completely empty?

My guess ...just by looking at the size (Tank) 6.5 Gallons, its just a guess. DO NOT OVER FILL IN temps less then 20*, it will freeze solid at 10 or less.

I believe it's 5.5 gallons on the pickups

I use about 1gallon of DEF for every 1000 miles.

I thought that I had read in the manual the DEF tank is 8 gal.....
